The Weekly Word from CDS FP - January 31-February 15, 2019
Looking Back
Hello All,
It has been a great week back at school. I hope that everyone enjoyed their Lunar New Year break. Before going away, most classes completed writing MAP tests. Several students finished up this past week with the final day of testing being Thursday. Unlike many other standardized tests, for MAP tests, students are giving as much time as needed, so it is common and expected that many students will need more time than others. As such, results will be generated this weekend, and we plan to deliver student progress reports midweek.
Also prior to the Lunar Break was the 100th day of school. Students celebrated by wearing a variety of CDS clothes, from soccer uniforms to clothes from past special events like Jumping for Healthy Hearts or Jogathon.
The first week back after the break was busy with Book Week. A big thank you to Ms. Choo, our librarian for all her work to prepare such a successful week. Read on below for her summary of the event. Thank you, too for all the parent support during the week. Whether it is bringing a pet to school or being a “global reader”, your support helps to make the week one of students’ favorite times of the year - thank you!
Thanks to Ms. Drews and the students from FP TV and FP Podcasting for leading Book Week Announcements. It was done via live-casting from YouTube or utilizing the PA system in the Frist Program. Trivia and fun facts were shared each time. Something else that was shared was how fantastic students did with either the Raz-a-thon (PKK) or the AR-a-thon (1234). Classes did fantastic with this, and our teachers were very proud of our students for their achievement - especially Hassan in Grade four who led not only his class, but the whole school with 125 AR points in just 7 school-days!
Spring Lab and ASP information will soon be shared. As always, we encourage communication between student and parent about his or her choices, so stay tuned for details.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Drama, Pre-K, and Book Week. Thank you, Ms. Nortier, Ms. Lee, and Ms. Choo!
Drama class with Ms. Nortier
While Kindergarten is learning everything about puppets and puppet theatre this term, the second graders are exploring mime techniques. Here are some moments from inside the Drama room.
A team effort by the Kindergarteners doing the puppet show “The Ugly Worm”, Asher, Tayin and Soonwoong experiencing shadow puppetry and the second graders in miming action.
Pre-K with Ms. Lee
In math class, Pre-K students have been learning about addition. We began the class by reviewing numbers and practicing addition questions in math stations. Then, we played a game called treasure hunting to demonstrate their understandings of addition by using objects, such as plastic coins and jewels. In order to connect to the science unit, they shook and measured plastic coins before checking the coins in egg shells. Based on their predictions, they drew how many coins would be in eggshells. Then, they exchanged their coins that found from two eggs to jewels and made an addition poster together.
As we played, Jiwon said, "Have three and five (jewels) again, have eight. Yey!" We also used PPT slides to practice addition with one digit numbers.
We had an excellent time together with these activities and now children feel comfortable to show their understandings of addition.
Book Week with Ms. Choo
On Monday, we kicked off the week with "The Traveling Photographer" and author, Richard Sobol, who shared about his adventures photographing animals, people, and buildings around the world. We also learned about how he creates stories with his photographs.
Tuesday was Reading Buddies Day. Grades 1 to 4 read books to nine animal buddies including dogs, fish, hamsters, birds, a cat, and a leopard gecko! Thanks to everyone who brought a pet, and special thanks to Ellie's mom and Jinwoo's mom for supervising animal buddies during the event. PK and K shared books with high school reading buddies - many thanks to Ms. Laders and 11C for reading with the FP students!
On Wednesday, Book Character Day, it was great to see many creative costumes and learn about students' favorite book characters!
On Thursday, we had Global Readers Day. A huge thanks to the 26 parents and teachers who volunteered to read. The students had a blast traveling around the library to 11 different "countries" and hearing stories in 8 languages!
Finally, Friday was the fifth annual Baker's Bodacious Book Swap! The book swap store in the grade 4 classroom looked great and there were hundreds of books that students could swap.
