Today we had an assembly from Recology focused on educating our students about waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation. In addition to our K-6 assemblies, our 6th graders had a separate training on how to run our recycling and composting program at lunch. Also, our 5th graders will be starting a worm composting station outside our science lab that aligns with the science standards for 5th grade. Not only will we compost to help the environment but also to add to our learning for all students! Our goal is to teach this generation of students to be more aware of the impact trash has on our environment and what they can do everyday to help locally at their school. I'm hopeful that what they learn at school can also be applied at home. Here's a helpful link called "What Goes Where?" from Recology about what we can recycle and compost in Sonoma County: https://www.recology.com/recology-san-mateo-county/what-goes-where/.
Some other ways you can help reinforce this environmental awareness for students is by using reusable bags/containers for snack and lunch time, reuse food your child doesn't eat for the following day(whole apples, granola bars, etc) and encouraging your child to bring food home they don't eat so you are aware of how much they're eating, what they like/don't like and can plan accordingly. We're excited for this new focus and feel like it is another important piece to our priority of wellness for students at Sequoia. Feel free to ask your child what they learned today at the assembly!
Picture day is coming next week! Kindergarten through 3rd grade will have picture day on Tuesday, September 10th and 4th-6th grade will take photos on Wednesday, September 11th. Class and individual pictures will happen on the same day. Your child does not need to come with anything prepared on picture day, just a nice smile! Please click the link below for more information.
Our first SPC sponsored movie night is coming next Friday, September 13th! We will be showing the newest version of Aladdin starting at 6:00pm. Doors will open at 5:30 so families can get set up! Feel free to bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows or low sitting chairs to enjoy the experience on the big screen. 6th graders will be selling concessions to help fundraise for various 6th grade events that happen throughout the year. This is a family event and all students should be accompanied by an adult. Hope to see you there!
Have a great weekend!
