ELL Tip of the Week
ELL Tip of the Week
Use care when crafting lesson plans
Make sure not to over plan or rush through the lesson, ELL students need additional think and processing time. Integrate an activity to either access or build background knowledge (many of the BDI strategies can be used for this purpose). Think of ways for students to pre-read, pre-listen, pre-write, and prepare. Teach new concepts by first using familiar materials to stimulate learning. This allows the ELL students to show the teacher their current understanding and helps both the teacher and ELL student link the learning to their schema. Do not forget the guided practice, ELL students need the modeling and practice provided by guided practice before being expected to work independently. Also, do not leave out the wrap up. It is helpful for ELL students to revisit the learning and connect all the pieces to the essential question.
