Messages & Ideas from Special Areas & Interventionists
Introduction
Art- Ms. Strauss
Hello friends,
I hope this week finds you happy, healthy and creative. I have been busy creating as well. I have been researching and creating artistic ideas for you to explore while you are at home. There is a series of Youtube videos that I stumbled across called Art with Mati and Dada. There are several cartoon videos that will introduce you to various artists. This week I am going to recommend watching one on Paul Klee (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqHJ9gDLkL8&t=2s). Please observe how all of his paintings, sculptures and puppets were balanced. Why don’t you create a puppet or a picture of someone that is imaginary or from your dreams. Use whatever materials you can find. Try to keep it balanced and in a Paul Klee style. Let your imagination go wild!
It is a lot of fun to get inspiration from a world famous artist. I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Please email me a picture of you with your creation (lstrauss@delranschools.org). I miss seeing your smiling faces and laughing with all of you!
Xo,
Ms. Strauss
Health- Mrs. Lenguadoro
Hello My Darlings.
How are we doing taking care of our Germ Fighting Machines? Are you remembering all the things that we talked about in class? I know that you are eating healthy foods, washing your hands, and trying to keep those hands away from your faces. This week I want you to think about how important sleep is for germ fighting. Remember that we need energy to fight germs and sleep gives us extra energy for the fight.
I have a short, little video that I think you will like that will tell you more about sleep, if you are able to watch it.

Library & Computers- Mrs. Reasso
‘Ello, loves! That is my british greeting to you! “Cheerio” also comes to mind when I think of all you! Try to speak like Peppa Pig, she has an english accent (like me!) today.
Keep smiling as we learn how to learn in new ways together.
I have set up my living room as my home gym/art room/library/music room! I love all of the great ideas your other special area teachers are sharing! I am going to do them, too! I will share some pictures on my website if I can remember my password!
I have also been cooking healthy foods and washing my hands to MY favorite song - Happy Birthday! This is my birthday week. If you share a March birthday, I am singing to you, also!
I used youtube to learn how to play, Happy Birthday on my accordion! There are many ways to learn!
Next week, new song! Right now I am listening to Mr O’s suggested song, “Rhythm of the Rain”!
Right now, your job is to keep learning new things. Remember, at the library you can learn about anything you want!
I am reading this beautiful picture book. It was a Christmas gift from one of my brothers.
It seems so appropriate for these quieter days.
It is a non-fiction book about how animals and plants get “restful” and “quiet” when conditions are harsh. When the conditions get better (think warm sunny spring!) they wake up, refreshed and ready to go!
The pictures are beautiful. Trees, ladybugs, bears, earthworms, squirrels. They’re all doing it!
I feel like we are, too! In a way.

Music- Mr. Odom
Memories
Have you ever heard a song that brought back memories in your mind? (While hearing the music you remembered a show, a video game, a place, a time, a person, a pet, an event or etc.) I remember watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, eating a big bowl of cereal, and hearing the music of and in the cartoons I was watching. I think the music in the cartoons was part of what got me interested in watching the cartoons. I love Music!
Here’s the link to one of those cartoons and melodies in my memory “Conjunction Junction:”

Here’s a short clip of the lead singer and composer of “Conjunction Junction” performing Live:

Is there any music in your memory from shows or cartoons or video games you remember? Can you hum the tune (melody) of the music? See if you can hum the tune of a piece of music you remember.

Physical Education- Mr. Zwier and Mr. Cordero
Hey Kiddos!
We have been making sure to get our 30 minutes of physical activity in each day, how about you? Being active and exercising is a great way to stay healthy and feel great. Think about how great you feel when you get up and do something active. Doesn’t it feel some much better when you get your heart pumping fast and break a sweat than when you just sit on the couch and watch movies. I admit, I have been watching my fair share of movies, but I always make sure to get my 30 minutes of activity in! I got an idea while watching one movie and decided to make a game out of it for you guys to play. It’s called “A Minion Ways To Be Fit”. Click the link, give it a try and let me know what you think!
Also, if you liked training like an Avenger last week, try to train like you're in the Justice League this week!

K Reading- Jaime
Hello my Awesome Kindergarteners!! I miss seeing your smiley faces and playing all of our fun reading games. I hope you had so much fun playing the mystery letter game from last week and are continuing to practice all your letter sounds.
If your house is anything like my house, you may all have the sniffles from all the beautiful trees and flowers that are blooming outside, and using a lot of tissues. Well, once that tissue box is empty, don’t throw it out. This box can now become a fun game machine. Write each letter of the alphabet on a piece of paper. Then cut the letters out to make them each into a small letter square. Put the letter squares into the tissue box and shake it up. Dig your hand in and pull one square out. When you choose the letter, I would like for you to say the letter and the sound it makes. You can make this game into a mystery sight word game as well!! It will be so much fun.
If you have an iPad or computer- you can also visit Starfall for extra fun practice!! https://www.starfall.com/h/index-kindergarten.php
(I have found that the website is offering more free material than the app is).
Happy reading!!

2nd Grade Reading- Mrs. Schneider
Hello Friends!
I continue to miss you! I stopped by school this morning to get some things for online lessons, and the place was not the same without you!
I hope you are reading, reading, reading. Reading helps you explore the world when you are stuck in the house. This week I’d like to challenge you to look for long vowel sounds in the reading you do. How are the long vowels spelled, vowel-consonant-e or with a vowel team? Look for long o sounds this week. Remember to practice your sight words so you don’t forget them.
If you have run out of books at home, here is an app I found with free ones on it. Go ahead and try it. If you have a younger brother or sister, read something to them to keep them busy for your grown-ups. www.rivet.com
Remember to be a helping hand at home. I can’t wait to see all your smiling faces when this is all over and we can go back to school. Have fun!
Love and kisses,
Mrs. Schneider
Sight Words- Mrs. Roskos
“The more you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,” says Dr. Seuss. So let’s keep practicing those sight words so we can become better readers. One idea is to go on a simple sight word hunt by having a grown up or sibling write sight words on small pieces of paper and then hide the words around your house. Go on a hunt and see how many you can find then you can read all the words you know. Another idea is if you have playdough you can spread the playdough out on a plate and practice writing a sight in the playdough with a small stick or unsharpened pencil. Then flatten the playdough out and write another one. Be proud of all the sight words you know!
If you have a computer or ipad and like to move and groove then try the popcorn words by Jack Hartmann https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh7oa6KOHmc
If you like to play online games try sight word smash https://www.roomrecess.com/mobile/SightWordSmash/play.html

I miss seeing all your smiling faces:)

Math- Mrs. Guarini
Boys and girls...I miss you! I hope you are enjoying your time at home with your families! We have been lucky with some warmer days, so I bet you have been playing outside. This week, I have a fun activity that will help you keep active even during those rainy days you may be stuck inside. Check out this free website to practice all kinds of math skills. I have been using this with my daughters at home and they love it. After you click on the website link, click on the MATH section. There are lots of skills you can practice. I would like you to look at the addition, subtraction, and number sense choices. You can challenge yourself by adjusting the time frames! I really hope you enjoy the extra practice (and get some exercise too:)
https://fluencyandfitness.com/
If you would rather practice math without using a computer, you can play Make a 10. With a parent or sibling, shuffle a deck of cards (take out the face cards) and give each player 4 cards. The goal of the game is to make a 10 using ANY combination of the four cards. If you can make ten, you take those cards, show them to your partner, and place them off to the side. Then, you replace them with new cards from the deck. Now it is your partner’s turn! If on your turn, you cannot make a 10, choose one of your four cards to put at the bottom of your deck, and then replace it with a new card from the pile. Remember you can make a 10 many different ways. It can be just a 10 card, a pair of cards that add to 10, or even 3 or 4 cards that add to 10. The game is over when you can no longer make any combinations of 10 or you run out of cards. I hope you have fun!
English as a Second Language for Kindergarten- Mrs. DeLoche
Hello! Oi! Merhaba!
Rain rain go away, come again another day. What a rainy start to the week! Since we couldn’t go outside to play much to begin the week I read a lot, baked some cookies, and sang and danced with my son. It is important to have fun and stay active indoors. This link to the “Singing in the Rain Song” is a fun and silly way to get you moving inside. Try to sing and dance along with this fun video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbFGojJxqoo. You could also talk about the weather with your families. “Today it is rainy outside. It feels cool out.” Use words we have learned like rainy, sunny, cloudy, hot, warm, cool, and cold to describe the weather. You can even make a weather chart for the week. Write the day of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) on one side and draw and label a picture to show what the weather was like on the other side of your weather chart.
Don’t forget to keep practicing your English with your Choice Boards. Pick one thing to try each day. Remember, by the end of days 6-10 you should have picked at least one new listening, speaking, reading, and writing activity to try this week.
If there is anything you need please don’t hesitate to reach out to me adeloche@delranschools.org.
Have fun and be brave!

English as a Second Language for 1st Grade- Mrs. Slaven
I miss you so much! I hope you are doing well and enjoying time with your family. I was thinking of a fun activity you could do with the whole family! When my son Luke was your age and had friends over he would always want me to make a treasure hunt for him around the neighborhood. I was thinking this would be fun for you! I will write a list of things that you can look for in your neighborhood. I think it would be great practice if you wrote these words down on a piece of paper to take with you. Take a pencil too so that you can cross off the things you see on the list. Are you ready?? Here are the things I want you to look for…
A flag 6. A door wreath
pink flowers 7. A squirrel
A bike 8. A chair
A white car 9. A heart
A fence 10. A mailbox
See how many items you can find! You can also listen to some books read to you www.storyonline.net . Watch a story and then tell someone what the story was about, the characters and setting. You can also draw a picture about the story! Have fun!

Hi, Oi, Merhaba, Hola awesome first graders and second graders! I miss seeing you and laughing with you! I hope you are finding new things to read, create, and do while you aren’t at school.
Here are some fun activities:
Look out the window or go outside. The season of spring started last Saturday. What is changing outside? What clues do you see that show you that the spring season is here? Do you see any rabbits yet? How many clues can you find? Make a list and draw a picture. You can draw a rabbit (some people say bunny). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS6BQWvgZrE
If you liked the activity last week, you will like this too. Watch the story, read the book, watch a video, and do the activity. You can use a phone, tablet, or computer. Find out more about stars, ponds, measurement, kindness, and safety. https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome/grades-1-2-week-2.html
Have fun,
Ms. Miles
