Motivation
Motivation: What matters most
#1 Effort - self-discipline, hard work
#2 People Skills - more important than IQ - how to regulate social-emotional skills, soft skills
#3 Intelligence is the 3rd predictor of who is going to be successful
It is the responsibility of the teacher to make sure instruction is motivating for students.
Value & Expectancy for success - Ex - you get to play BB with Michael Jordan or Little Kid - Who would you pick?)
Fun
Want to win
Once in a life time
I scored on Michael Jordan
Value X Expectancy for success = Motivation
10 X 10 = 100
0 X 10 = 0
Some don’t care about MJ, so the value isn't there.
Change of Success -
Examples:
High value can trump your initial success - ex. Don’t make BB team one year and then next year did.
A fear of failure can trump value. Dating - Ask her or give up. He likes her but is not willing to risk rejection and doesn’t ask her.
When both value and expectancy for success is low most always give up. Student doesn’t feel he has any value for math. He tries but no success. Low value and low success. Keep going or give up.
High Value and High Success = high motivation. Reading - loves it and comes easy. High success and value.
Increase Value
Intrinsic Value - Student values the thing itself. Ex. science
Extrinsic Value - The student values the rewards associated with the thing.
Socio-Emotional Value - I may not like math, but I like my math teacher….Values it because other people he knows values it.
“It is literally neurologically impossible to think deeply about things that you don’t care about.”
Ways to increase Value
Curiosity - Gets kids engaged. Students are always paying attention….to something! You need to generate curiosity. Ex. if you know what it is, keep it quiet. Put your hand over your mouth if you think you are at risk to tell…..
Sell it, Curiosity gets attention and prediction sustains attention. Ex. old ice tray.
