Annual MTSS
Westside Community Schools continues the implementation of MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
What is MTSS? MTSS is a process of providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual children’s progress & skills are monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. The MTSS process is flexible and designed to meet the needs of all students. This process allows for a continuum of support based entirely on students’ individual needs. This support may be provided in a small group by the classroom teacher or other support staff, either within or outside the classroom.
What does this mean for my child? A key component of the MTSS process is that all children receive high quality instruction in their classroom. Universal screenings are used to review the progress of all students and are given three times per year. As a result of the screening, students may be identified as needing supplemental intervention in addition to instruction they are receiving in their classroom. If your child is identified as needing intervention you will receive notification. Please contact your child’s building principal with questions.
Nebraska Reading Improvement Act
The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act became law in 2018 and will go into effect the 2019-2020 school year. The goal is that all Nebraska students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. The Nebraska READS initiative emphasizes the need for kindergarten through third grade students to have access to high-quality instruction and for struggling readers to receive targeted support. Our current MTSS structure in Westside Community Schools already allows for us to meet these requirements.
One more thing…
The Paddock Road Curriculum Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 12th, from 6-7pm. This year, our Curriculum Night will take on a slightly different format. To create a more hands-on experience, families will have the opportunity to move freely to several different classrooms to participate in games and activities that highlight our curricular areas. Areas such as technology, school safety, and positive behavior supports will also be highlighted. Families who have specific questions regarding curricular areas will be encouraged to contact their child’s teacher for more information. Child care and a pizza dinner will also be provided!

It's been a wonderful start to the year! Students are learning about digital resources, how to cite resources, being great digital citizens, book care, library procedures, different types of books and listening to read-aloud books! We are looking forward to digging deeper into these topics as we go forward into the first quarter!

-
Rely on school professionals to establish the connection and facilitate the appointment, either onsite at your child’s school (where applicable) or at Children’s Behavioral Health.

Throughout the community, students and their families encounter a range of concerns, including stress, depression, cyber-bullying, gender identity, inattention, impulsivity, test anxiety, grief, family conflict, communication problems, eating disorders and self-destructive behaviors. Psychologists at Children’s Behavioral Health are eager and well equipped to help address any cognitive, emotional, developmental, or personal issue that your student or family might be facing. These services can be scheduled at your convenience, often within 48 hours if necessary.

Counselor's Corner
In classroom counseling this quarter, K-4th grade students will be learning communication strategies to foster friendships and assertiveness. Students in 5th-6th grade will be learning ways to maximize their ability to learn by participating in various activities.
Kindergarten and 1st grade - Our objectives are to help students understand how to listen and why it is important. Students will learn helpful ways to express their feelings and solve problems with others.
2nd – 4th grades - Our objectives are to continue our previous work with communication strategies as well as help students understand that positive self-talk is helpful in managing angry feelings.
5th grade – Our objectives are to help students identify ways they can control their own learning and school success. They will identify personal areas of strength as well as personal areas in need of growth.
6th grade - Your child will complete the Gallup Strengths Explorer Survey during the month of September. This survey was developed by Gallup for use by Grade 4-6 students to identify natural talents. Upon completion, the students will receive immediate information on their top three strength themes. The students will receive support in understanding their strength themes and how they can be used.
