COMMODORES LEARNING BY ASKING, SHARING, AND SHOWING
"Maury High School is committed to a school-wide focus of effective questioning strategies, cooperative learning, and modeling that will encourage and promote
all students to be active in the teaching and learning process.”
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Was your child in school today?
It is important for your child to attend school every day. When a student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, he or she misses critical instructional time and learning opportunities. This often has long- term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time.
Attendance is now part of the state accreditation status. In order to remain fully accredited, students must come to school every day.
If you see students that you know attend Maury and should be in school, but are not, please contact our Graduation Coach, Wes Price at 757-275-4514.

MHSP - 10th ANNUAL SENIOR WHITE SHIRT CEREMONY
December 20th 8:00 a.m. AUDITORIUM
The White Shirt Ceremony is an annual tradition honoring the MHSP senior status. Inspired by the White Coat ceremony, it is widely known that the white coat is a mark of distinction and honor for all healthcare workers who wear them. It represents all the hard work and dedication that they have put into their chosen profession. Every year on the first day of all medical schools across the country, the incoming students and staff celebrate with a White Coat Ceremony. The coat becomes a symbolic gesture of passing on knowledge to the students. Once all the students have been placed into their coats, they stand and speak the words of the Hippocratic Oath for the first time. MHSP students will experience a similar program when they receive their white shirts, walk across the stage and then recite the MHSP Student Hippocratic oath for the first time. This has become a very special tradition and many alum attend to relive some of their MHSP-Maury memories.

MAURY SHARING TABLE
The CDP department at MHS has established a food sharing table during all lunches. The Sharing Table is a place where students can place unopened food and drinks that they choose not to eat or drink. This provides an opportunity for other students to take additional helpings of food or beverages from the Sharing Table at no cost to them and reduce cafeteria waste.
How Does the Sharing Table Work?
The Sharing Table is a place where students can place unopened food and drinks that they choose not to eat or drink. This provides an opportunity for other students to take additional helpings of food or beverages from the Sharing Table at no cost to them. Students must drop off unwanted food and drink on the Sharing Table immediately after leaving the serving line. If a student is still hungry after finishing his or her meal, he or she may pick-up items from the Sharing Table.
What Can Be Placed on the Sharing Table?
Pre-packaged food, unopened wrapped food and beverages, or food items with a peel.
Examples include:
· Unopened milk, cheese sticks, yogurt, and cut fruits and vegetables.
· Unopened crackers, cereal bars, and chips.
· Wrapped fresh fruits and vegetables.
· Unwrapped whole fruits with an inedible peel, such as oranges or bananas.
· No items from home can be placed on the Sharing Table.
Please share this with your students and encourage them to participate. Thank you!
“We have CLASS-Commodores Learning by Asking, Showing, and Sharing.”
DO YOU HAVE A PICTURE TO SHARE?
If you have taken pictures at an event involving Maury students, please share them with the yearbook staff for possible inclusion in the yearbook! We especially need pictures of the Maury Sailing and Maury Rowing teams. Just visit Pictavo Community Upload (School Code: 77510), and upload them. Your contributions are appreciated!

SUMMER RESIDENTIAL GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL PROGRAMS
HRT STUDENT FREEDOM PASS
Students can still acquire an HRT Student Freedom Pass. It's easy and it's FREE. The pass provides access to HRT buses, The Tide, and the Elizabeth River Ferry. They are doing photo ID badges, so if students missed the in-school registration, they need to visit a transfer station.
The HRT Student Freedom Pass will be available to all students this year (even if they are older than 17). They will need to complete the application online, and bring with them to the transfer station (St. Paul's Blvd or Monticello Ave. locations) a copy of their current school schedule as proof that they are enrolled in school. For more information, visit the HRT Student Freedom Pass site.
