Mohegan Winter Newsletter

Ellen Tuckner, Principal

The weather outside may be chilly, but Mohegan students are certainly turning up the learning heat in their classrooms! From owl pellet investigations to recorder playing, Reader's Theater to maker spaces, telling time, determining author's perspective and engineering bridges-the new learning goes on and on. Enjoy these photos of our Mustangs in action!

Restoring unstructured play to a generation of kids

As part of our PBIS incentives, we participated in Global School Play Day where all of our students spent 30-45 minutes in free play with any toys/games of their choice. The only restriction was there could be no screen based activity- all lo-tech! The students had a wonderful time and there was evidence of huge imaginations all around

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

Staying Healthy

Big image
Our community has been challenged with so many of the students getting sick over the past few weeks. The district has been doing what it can to try and keep the germs away by extra cleaning with disinfectant on as many surfaces as is possible. The most helpful thing families can do to help us maintain a healthy school is to keep your child home if they aren't feeling well. A child is allowed back to school only if they are fever-free or hasn't vomited within 24 hours before they return.

Shelton Career and College Awareness Week- April 24-28, 2017

A week of activities throughout the district to help students connect school to real world work

As part of Career and College Awareness week, Cathy Lindstrom, our guidance counselor, is planning a Career Day for Mohegan School students on April 25th, 2017 from 9:00a.m until 11:00a.m. She is seeking the help of parents and guardians to present to grades Kindergarten through four who would come to the school and speak about their career to approximately 4 groups of children in the classroom for about 20 minutes at a time . If you are able to do this and would like to be a part of our Career Day, please email her at clindstrom@sheltonpublicschools.org by March 17th.

Help Support the Budget!!

As always, budget season makes for tough conversations and decisions. This year we are facing many uncertainties due to a variety of factors at both the federal and state levels. It is highly likely that we will not be receiving as many funds as we typically do, and this will affect our budget. At Mohegan, we are likely going to face some important cuts that will translate to less services to our students. We need your support to write or call the Board of Alderman's office, as well as attend some of their meetings to voice your concerns. Check the City of Shelton website for Board of Alderman meeting dates and times. The more voices that are heard, the greater the chance we can make a difference!
As I write this, the cafeteria has been totally transformed into glorious redness for the Sweetheart Dance! I'm sure it will be a great hit and fun will be had by all.

I am always available to hear any of your concerns and causes for celebration! Your children are always on the forefront of our minds as we take the journey with them toward becoming the best people they can be. Please don't hesitate to reach out at any time for a meeting or phone chat.

Warm regards,

Ellen
