Watertown Middle School 2019-2020
Hello and Happy Sunday - I hope this community bulletin finds you and your family, near and far, healthy and well. For those of you who celebrate Easter or Passover, I hope you enjoyed the holidays and were able to relax with family members. From my walks around the neighborhood this weekend, it is evident that spring has sprung! There are so many beautiful flowers and blossoms already!
We are entering Week 2 of Phase 2 of Remote Learning, and many students are having success by following a schedule, attending scheduled Zoom meetings, and checking in with their teachers. If your child finds any part of the routine overwhelming, please contact their teachers or guidance counselor. We are here to support the students and help them access their academic work, as well as support their social-emotional well-being.
All students should be attending the four "core" subjects: Math, ELA, History, and Science. Additionally, students have a World Language or Reading class, PE, and a Specialist class. Specialist classes are new for Term 4 starting Monday, 4/13, and the schedule is posted below.
The Zoom meetings / Community meetings have been going well, but I will emphasize again that school appropriate behavior is the expectation at all times, and that student safety is at the forefront of our minds. Please reinforce with your children that when they sign in to Zoom, they must use their real first and last name. If they do not, they will not be admitted to the class and will receive no credit for the class. If there is a security issue with using their first and last names, please contact the teacher, Mr. Del Porto, or me. We want to keep all students safe and ensure that only WMS students are present during Zoom meetings.
Mr. Cloherty and I have been working with WHS to continue the process of transitioning the 8th graders to the high school. More information about this process will be coming out this week. Information about the incoming 6th-grade process will be coming out soon as well.
I hope to see many of you at the Zoom PTO meeting on Wednesday night. More information is below. Please tell your children we miss them very much and hope everyone is well. We are looking forward to seeing pictures of them during Spirit Week this week! (More information below). Have a wonderful week.
Take good care of each other,
All my best,
Donna

All students will be changing their specialists on Monday, April 13th. They should be rotating to the Specialist they have not had so far this year. Community Meetings and Expectations
Please follow school dress code (no pajamas)
School appropriate language and behavior
Respect each other during the meeting
Students (and teachers) have the option to turn off their video if they are more comfortable participating that way
The Community Meeting will not be recorded by the teacher, and no part of it should ever be recorded by a student.
This is a fun way to re-connect, but we also need to keep it school/professional. Everyone should be sitting up as we would in a classroom. It is possible to change the background of the video if you would rather no one sees your location.
Should anything inappropriate occur during the Community Meetings, the teacher will report the behavior to Mr. Del Porto or me, and parents/guardians will be contacted. The incident will be recorded just as if we were in school.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher or me. If you have technology issues or questions, please reach out to Mr. Del Porto at jason.delporto@watertown.k12.ma.us

Many of you have asked how to help...
One important way to help is by donating to the WATERTOWN FOOD PANTRY.
The Watertown Council on Aging administers the Watertown Food Pantry, which provides food assistance to any Watertown resident in need.
LOCATION: The Food Pantry is located at the rear of the Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church at 80 Mt. Auburn Street. The entrance to the Food Pantry is around the left corner of the church (formerly St. John's) from the parking lot at the side of the building, basement level. Look for the Watertown Food Pantry signs.
DAYS and HOURS: The food pantry has changed their days and hours due to COVID-19. They are only open Tuesdays from 10am to 2pm until further notice. This is a link to the town website with the information.
