Expectations?
For this specific intro I'll focus on how I believe unmet expectations at work can result in toxicity in the culture.
For example, a student in your class causes a disruption for the umpteenth time. You've clearly hit your breaking point and you send the student to the office. The student then explains his/her view point, receives a consequence and then returns to class 30 minutes later. As the teacher you had an expectation in your mind and it may have just been unmet.
When an Unmet Expectation occurs there are a few ways to BEST deal with it.
1) Communicate - Opening up communication lines and sharing your hopes is a great way for people to begin to see multiple viewpoints.
2) Reflect - Instead of immediately feeling frustrated at the other party, think of what you could have controlled. Taking ownership of some situations will prevent a frustrated feeling when one of your expectations is unmet.
3) Let Go - When you get upset and angry your own personal well-being diminishes. Learn to let go. Dwelling on Unmet Expectations will be the demise of your happiness.
Let's Flip it. When an Unmet Expectation occurs there are a few ways to make it WORSE.
- Passive Aggressiveness - as the word indicates, is a tendency to engage in indirect expression of hostility through acts such as subtle insults, sullen behavior, stubbornness, or a deliberate failure to accomplish required tasks. Exhibiting passive aggressive behaviors is sure to slowly kill the culture and create an overall toxic environment.
- Hostility - if...if you had an expectation and it was unmet. The solution is to not be hostile. In all likelihood this will make it get far worse before it can ever get better.
