Homeroom Buzz

Mrs. Morris Room 220 - 12/8/2014

What's all the BUZZ about?

Winter Break is approaching rapidly! In writing, we are starting to learn about persuasive writing. We will be starting the first of several mini-lessons this week that cover how to write a persuasive essay. I have been conferencing with students to give suggestions for improvements on their expository prompts. Please keep in mind the focus and skills for writing this quarter have changed. Students are expected to plan, draft, revise, and edit an essay in response to a given prompt that stays on topic and includes a beginning, middle, and end. Their essays should include concise vocabulary and details.

In reading, your student is currently working on a Biography Project. Each student was able to choose a person that was of interest to them and conduct research to learn more about that person. This project is entirely school based. Please have a conversation with your student concerning who they chose and what they have learned. We will be presenting these projects next week and I look forward to seeing their hard work! They have really enjoyed this project. We have also started a book buddy reading program with Mrs. McLaughlin's 1st grade class. Be sure to ask your student who their buddy is:)

Next week, some students will begin going to Mrs. Dettmann for reading group. If your child starts going to Mrs. Dettmann for reading group, then he/she will not receive additional reading instruction from me. Each student will receive reading instruction from only one of us. Mrs. Dettmann's work will be in addition to regular literacy work.

In math, most classes are currently working on fractions. We will be simplifying fractions, ordering & comparing fractions, converting mixed to improper fractions (and vice versa), and adding & subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators in upcoming weeks. If you have questions about what your student is learning, please contact your student's math teacher.

We are currently in the middle of Mrs. Grogan's Geology science unit. Science will conclude on December 18, 2104. When we return from break the children will return to me for the VS 7 social studies unit.

Students who participate in outdoor recess must wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions. (When it is between 40-50 degrees, students must have long sleeves and long pants on.) When it is 40 or colder; a coat must be worn outside. Students will be given the option to stay inside when the temperature is below 32 degrees.

A huge thank you to those who have donated pencils to our classroom! I could not believe we ran out so quickly! I have changed the method in which the students get pencils, so hopefully we can conserve them:) We can always use pencils in our room!

"Let it Snow" Winter Celebration

Our winter celebration is set for Friday, December 19th at 12:00pm. Susan Gehring (our room parent) has organized some great activities for the children! She will be sending out a sign up genius for volunteers and supplies! Please be on the look out for it and thank you in advance for your help and support!

Happy Holidays and Winter Break!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful, safe, and healthy winter break! Each of your children holds a very special place in my heart and I am truly grateful to spend each day with them. Thank you for sharing them with me and have a wonderful break!

Kindest Regards,
Mrs. Morris
