Parents of incoming Kindergarten students are invited to meet with the Elementary School Principals to learn more about the Kindergarten onboarding process, overall curriculum goals, and how Natick Public Schools works to support its youngest learners. Principals will discuss the orientation process (parent orientation, student assessment, and student orientation) and the modifications in place to support safety at school. Also discussed will be programming and services and the calendar of important events. This evening will help you prepare for your child’s transition into kindergarten.
Principal's Message
Dear Johnson Families,
We are several lessons into “Social Awareness,” the third of five units of study in the Everyday Speech curriculum. Social Awareness places importance on how we promote kindness and equity and how we value and treat others, especially others who may be different from us.
Our students at different grade levels have been learning about:
· Positive qualities in people that cross all cultures and groups.
· The many ways we’re all similar and different.
· Simple ways to show kindness and how it feels when others are kind to them.
· Describe rules that help students treat each other fairly.
· Demonstrate how students help each other (e.g., sharing, not interrupting).
· Demonstrate honesty and fairness while playing or working with others.
· Recognize the feelings and perspectives of others.
· Recognize individual and group similarities and differences.
· Believe that others deserve to be treated with kindness and compassion.
Some tips for families at home:
· Discuss positive qualities in people that cross all cultures and groups. Talk about the many ways we’re all similar and different.
· Discuss simple ways to show kindness and how it feels when others are kind to them.
· Discuss why building relationships with others who are different from oneself is worthwhile and how they can see themselves doing that in school or in their community.
· Give your child household roles or jobs that help them contribute to the group and team within your home. Discuss how they’re being helpful and why it’s significant for the collective well-being of everyone in the home as a group.
As we continue this important work, I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone in our Johnson School Community: teachers, students, staff, and families for your support in this collective work to make this an equitable, inclusive, and safe environment for all.
Best regards,
John
Things You Need to Know!
1 - THE COLD WINTER WEATHER IS HERE! Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for these cold days. In addition, remind your children to check the lost and found if they have left something behind.
2 - LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
A lot of our Jaguars leave things behind each day. This is a friendly reminder to label all belongings that you send to school with your students. If items are labeled, we can return them to their rightful owners. Grab a sharpie and write your student's name on items (gloves, hats, coats, boots, water bottles, etc.).
3 - FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
We have a range of financial supports available in the Natick Public Schools. This includes assistance with school fees, such as the bus and picture day, scholarships for programs such as the Book Fair and connections to community resources that may be helpful. If you are interested in these programs, please contact Laura Loftus, our school counselors, to have a private conversation. Her email is lloftus@natickps.org.
