Something New for Winter - A Poem for Peter

Be sure to look for A POEM FOR PETER, "a picture book from author Andrea Davis Pinkney that celebrates the extraordinary life of Ezra Jack Keats, creator of The Snowy Day, reaffirming that those who pursue their dreams can inspire generations of dreamers." Below you will find a link to The Snowy Day Read Aloud and an awesome blog post from All the Wonders that discusses this great new book.

MackinVia Ebooks for Winter Time

PES students and families have access to 1700 e-books to read via MackinVIA. Some books are interactive, some can be used as a read aloud, while others are simply a standard book to be read online. Click the links below the book covers to read the e-books we have about Christmas. Username = Student # Password = pirates. Click the linked words for additional books about Winter Time.

Winnie the Pooh Day - A. A. Milne's Birthday January 18

Celebrate the amazing A. A. Milne’s birthday this month by reading Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick. You'll love this biographical picture book that shares the true story of Winnie the Bear. Of course you won't want to miss a classic Winnie the Pooh Tale too. You might also like Pooh games, videos and other activities on Disney's Winnie the Pooh site.

Teach Graphix Week January 23-27

"Scholastic and Skype Invite You To Connect with Graphix Authors, January 23-27

No longer an underground movement appealing to a small following of enthusiasts, graphic novels have emerged as a growing segment of book publishing, and have become accepted by librarians and educators as mainstream literature for children and young adults —literature that powerfully motivates kids to read."

Bubble Gum Days - January 31- February 7

During this week students are invited to chew bubble gum during their media resource time. This holiday is traditionally a library fundraiser. We will collect quarters during media resource and use the proceeds to purchase new Bubble Gum print books and e-books for the media center. The best part of bubble gum days are the stories we read and the bubble gum we chew. Look for bubble gum fun ideas in next month's Pirate Cove Connection.

Birthday Book Club

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth.

To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardback book. This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves. For more information, contact the media center.
