This month students will participate in a various types of basketball competitions including half court games, full court games and other basketball skill challenges. The students will be working on basketball skills like dribbling, passing, shooting and teamwork. Students will be confronted with integrity and social interaction issues, as many of these activities will be student organized and monitored. January ends with the introduction of jump rope and various jump rope skills, as the class begins to prepare for our fifth annual Jump Rope for Heart event in February.

Our amazing third graders start the new year by learning about consumers, producers and decomposers. With a more in-depth look into consumers we will become familiar with carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. We will then focus on food chains and food webs and create complex diagrams of how organisms are all interconnected. We will also understand how the all living things survive with the energy of the sun. We will also play Eco Fluxx to help solidify the concepts that were learned.

!Feliz año nuevo! (Happy New Year). Third Grade is finally ready to begin planning, creating and writing in earnest their short scripts for their “En el restaurante” skits. Students will write, perform and record these skits complete with props, etc. This will likely take us through the entire month and will culminate with a trip to a local Mexican restaurant where they will practice ordering lunch in Spanish (details to follow). We have started adding questions about the weather to our classroom routine and we will continue practicing those phrases, along with other calendar vocabulary, each class. We will continue to recycle and review answering basic questions such as: What is your name? and How are you?
