COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS
Misconceptions and errors may result if students don’t understand how to apply place value when dividing whole numbers, how to interpret a quotient and remainder, or that the remainder cannot be greater than the divisor.
Errors may also result if students:
- do not include the remainder in the answer.
- add the remainder to the quotient.
- subtract or multiply instead of dividing.
- make a computation error when adding, multiplying, or subtracting.
- use an incorrect place value for one of the partial quotients.
TEACHING FOCUS
Practice and Building Confidence
Help students pay careful attention to the words and the numbers in each problem. Build confidence with independent practice with using area models and partial products to solve division problems, and finding and interpreting the remainder.
REVIEW THE TEST QUESTIONS
Review the questions students missed on the assessment. This will help you find the misconceptions they have and specifics on their weaknesses, which may help guide your RTI teaching. The video below will show you how to find their test results and access the test questions.

RECOMMENDED LESSONS
These are the recommended lessons, in order, to build these students from their current level toward grade level. Use your professional judgement in choosing which pieces to use and the appropriate pace for the students in your group.
