Looking Forward

Dear First CRC family and friends,

I'm not sure if you had an opportunity to stop by the Church this week, but what an amazing week of Vacation Bible School we had! More than 130 kids participated, many of whom come from families who don't have a church home.

On behalf of Pastor Joel, Kelsey, and Jackie, "THANK YOU" to the 50+ volunteers who made VBS possible. People serving in Nursery, in the kitchen, setting up, tearing down, serving as a tribe leaders, managing crafts, creating sets, donating food and craft items, and the list goes on and on...When you add it all up you begin to see just how much work goes into making VBS possible. Praise God!

As families enjoy a much needed break from school year festivities, may the Lord bless you and keep you safe in all your endeavors this summer.

In Christ,

Pastor Justin

Life Groups

You've received the Life Group FAQ's and met the Coordinator team. This week I would like to give you a sense of what each LEADER and HOST will be expected to do in their respective Life Groups:

What Life Group Leaders & Hosts Do...

Life Group Leaders (by that I mean Leaders and Hosts) will often be the first line of spiritual defense in the lives of group members. It will be their responsibility to keep in touch with the people in the group. Here is the breakdown:

LEADERS will:

  • Facilitate the weekly Life Group meeting.
  • Track personal needs of group members.
  • Communicate special needs to Pastors – if an issue arises in which you feel it extends beyond your experience, expertise, or comfort zone
  • Visit group members in the hospital – when a crisis or illness occurs, your group needs to spring into action. The host is responsible for coordinating with the church in providing meals or practical help if necessary and the Leader needs to be available for prayer and support.
  • Send weekly Life Group reminders each week
  • Pray for members in their group.

Qualifications:

  • Committed to Christ, His Word, and His people
  • Committed to integrity, character and spiritual Life
  • Leadership, Shepherding, and/or Facilitating – strength in one (not all) of these three
  • Spiritual and relational warmth – a growing relationship with Jesus and love for His people

HOSTS will:

  • Host the weekly Life Group meeting
  • Help the Leader care for members and their families
  • Provide a clean, comfortable home for meeting together (by providing a warm and friendly environment)
  • Visit group members in the hospital – when a crisis or illness occurs, your group needs to spring into action. The host is responsible for coordinating with the church in providing meals or practical help if necessary and the Leader need to be available for prayer and support.
  • Organize (or mobilize other group members for) the weekly refreshments, seasonal group potlucks, socials, and community service projects.

Qualifications:

  • Committed to Christ, His Word, and His people.
  • Committed to integrity, character and spiritual Life
  • Helps, Stewardship, and/or Hospitality – strength in one of these three
  • Administration and/or Organization – strength in one of these two

Coordinators will be responsible for choosing Leaders and Hosts who exhibit these qualities. If you know of someone who'd make an excellent Leader or Host, please email Amada Clemente at: aservantsheart1st@yahoo.com

NexStep Assessment

Progress on Prescriptions - In the coming weeks I will focus on ONE prescription at a time with any updates pertaining to that one that prescription.

Last week I updated you on prescription #1.

This week...#2

“Engage in an envisioning process to create a compelling vision giving clear direction for the future of our congregation.”

To do this, we were tasked with selecting an envisioning team comprising of:

1. All Pastors (3)

2. Council Members (1), and

3. Lay Leaders (4)

Ideal team members were to have the following personal qualities:

  • Are highly cooperative and collaborative
  • Are flexible and creative
  • Are well acquainted with Scripture
  • Are well differentiated, having self-awareness, and can easily take on the perspectives of others, and
  • Think systemically. These are people who are able to see things as a whole while working on component parts.

After thinking and praying together as a Council and Staff, we reached out to the following people to comprise of our team and, I'm delighted to say, they all agreed:

Leland Kootstra, Aaron Carpenter, Patty Briney, Sheri Tos, Adam Mackey.

We met together for a total of five days (and can live to tell the tale) developing a "Ministry Map" comprising of the following:

  • We Believe statements
  • A Mission Statement
  • A Vision Statement

The work of the Envisioning Team is done and has been sent to Full Council for possible edits and approval. For that reason I will hold off for now on sharing its contents with you until that process has reached its conclusion.

Next week I will give you an update on Prescription #3:

"Commit to becoming an outward focused, missional, evangelistically-effective church."

That's all for now.

Prayer

Each week I will invite us to lift up one particular topic on prayer.

This week, please pray for:

Our Congregation

As your Pastors, we've been praying for the Lord to lead us as a congregation where He would have us go and that we would be both attentive and willing to follow. Personally speaking, I'm learning that is easier said than done. But this congregation has experienced more than a century of God's guiding hand and I certain He's not done yet! Not many congregations can boast of 100+ years of faithful ministry. Pray for God to continue to lead us into unity of the Spirit.

Thought of the Week

Each week I will share an insight or perspective. No promises on whether it will be insightFUL...

There is so much to be done to kick-start our new Life Group ministry, but are excited about the challenge. Feel free to take a look at our new Life Group Webpage.

It's a work in progress!
