SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER

Message from the Director

The Super Bowl has come and gone. As a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, I was happy to see their former quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams win. When Stafford was with the Lions, they never even won a playoff game, but in his first year with the Rams, he went all the way. What a difference it makes when you are welcomed to the right team! If there was a Child Nutrition Super Bowl, I definitely think we would win it. In the coming days, you will be completing Onboarding training so we can all play a part in welcoming new employees to keep our team strong. Below, you will see how several elementary teams came together to celebrate Valentine's Day with amazing creativity and love. The video from No Kid Hungry (who awarded us a grant to purchase a blast chiller at the high school) celebrates the impact our profession has on children. The strength and compassion I see in each of you is what makes our team stand head and shoulders above the rest!

With gratitude,

Kathy

Valentine's Day at Cooks Corners

Amber Cruz has endless love and patience. Watching her interact with students is why she is beloved there. On Valentine's Day, Amber created a special menu with meatballs, the meal Lady and the Tramp dined on. Students loved watching the movie on the big screen during lunch. It was the first time many of them had seen this Disney classic. Kat Jones from Memorial served as a Traveling Tech to help her on this record setting participation day.

Valentine's Day at Thomas Jefferson Elementary

One of the reasons Laurie Boynak is such a great Cafe Manager is because she takes the time to know what her students are up to! She and Mari Gora teamed up to link the Cafeteria with the Classroom. The entire school is reading Stella Diaz Has Something to Say and Laurie brought the book to life by serving one of Stella's favorite meals, albondigas. Laurie created a special menu featuring meatballs with marinara, garlic toast, carrots and a churro. Now you know what albondigas are, too!

valentine's day at Heavilin

When your Cafe Manager is Jackie Schutz, promotions mastermind, you get inspired. Production Lead Jillian Cummings took a shot at creating a Valentine's Day poetry contest with great prizes...and it was a huge success! They served corn dogs, veggies and "sweetheart" strawberries with whipped topping. Way to go, Jillian! And way to go, Jackie, for nurturing her talent!

Valentine's Day at Flint Lake Elementary

Cafe Manager Olga Bonvissuto made Valentine's Day extra special at Flint Lake, all while having the Health Inspector there and a leak in her storeroom ceiling! The lucky students who found a sticker on the bottom of their fruit cup won prizes. A big shout out to Olga, Rachel and Natalie for not letting the chaos stop them from delivering fun and love to their students!

Administrative Review: Smart Snacks in Schools

In less than two weeks, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) will begin their Administrative Review of our operation. One area they look at is whether a school is in compliance with the federal requirement for Smart Snacks in Schools:

  • All foods and beverages sold on the school campus (excluding reimbursable meals), during the school day (defined as 12 am on a day of instruction to 30 minutes after the end of the official school day), meet regulatory requirements. This includes a la carte items sold during meals, and foods/beverages sold in vending machines, school stores, and any other venue; and
  • School sponsored fundraising limits are observed.

Any food sold during the school day must meet the Smart Snack standards. To find out if a food meets these guidelines, enter information from the nutrition label into the Smart Snacks Calculator. Did you know that we proudly sell only a la carte items that meet these standards? Want to see if a product meets the standards? Click on the link below.
