ADAPT - STRIVE
NBC NEWS - April 17, 2017
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Parents and Guardians:
We are in the final countdown and the end of the school year is just around the corner. We will be reminding you of several events so look for our email reminders. We have our Relay for Life event the 12th of May. We will have our again out ceremonies and our end of year celebrations. We will be inviting the parents and new students to ADAPT and STRIVE to come to an evening event so they can learn more about us.
Since we last "talked" we have a new part-time assistant principal, Jennifer Beal. Jennifer has lots of special education experience. She is a blessing to us and I can not wait for you to get the chance to meet her.
The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week. If you have a moment, please let the teacher and para (speech too) in your child's room know who much they mean to you.
Thank you for your support of us and of your child's teacher this year. This really is a partnership and I thank you for your support.
DOWNTOWN POD
The Downtown Pod is back again and working every day to become more independent in functional life skills that will prepare them for the transition into adulthood. Each and every student is working very hard on a multitude of skills. One example in the area of domestic and community skills is through cooking. The students work together to plan a menu, create a shopping list, shop for and purchase the items at the local grocery store, prepare the meal and then clean up. The Downtown Pod likes to keep it simple by cooking mostly microwave meals, but they also practice using other kitchen appliances too. The classes also take time to have a monthly Recreation/Leisure outing in the community. The students brainstorm different ideas and then take a vote. So far this year the students have taken social outings to the bowling alley, the mall and to Bogan Park. At Bogan Park, the students went on a nature walk, engaged in group volleyball games, played basketball, and went swimming. With each leisure outing the students practice navigating different community locations, paying the cashier, ordering from a menu, and how to appropriately interact and engage with friends. All of these activities encourage each student to become more self-sufficient and confident in their abilities.
The students also work at different vocational sites in the community to practice skills needed to hold a volunteer or supported employment position. Our students have accomplished a lot this year and each student is well on their way to a more independent future!
EMPLOYEES OF THE WEEK
Each week we recognize our students as Employee of the Week for exceptional work in the community and at their job sites.
