  • They did not retire his number because he was African American.
  • Although he never considered himself as a romodel for African Americans he didn't back away from speaking about racial issues.
  • The road to the 1961-62 began a little bit rocky .During the exhibition season when the Celtics African American players were denied admission to an Indiana bar and a Kentucky hotel coffee shop. So Russell, Sam Jones, Satch Sanders, and K.c Jones boycotted the game in Lexington.
