Carter G. Woodson is considered the "father of Black history". Woodson was a scholar, an American historian, and the founder of the Association for the study of Negro Life and History. He helped launch Negro History Week in 1926. Woodson's goal was the coordinated teaching of Black history in public schools. This week helped to celebrate and educate about Black culture and history. Slowly as acceptance grew, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month during the 1960's. During the 60's, protests around racial inequality and injustice were instrumental in creating this change. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976; 50 years after the original celebrations. Black History Month honors the triumphs, contributions, sacrifices, adversities, and rich cultural history of Black Americans.

Mrs. Kletch's Science Classes

Big picture
Our school counselors, Mrs. O'Neill and Mr. Maarouf joined Mrs. Kletch's science class to co-teach brain anatomy and function and it was AWESOME! Mrs. O'Neill made a PowerPoint and students were able to talk about the structure and function and being a junior high student. Mr. Maarouf co-taught four regular classes and Mrs. O'Neill worked with advanced classes. Students are still talking about it today!! Hopefully the two of them will co-teach every year because it was great to have the science and psychology of brain development in the same lesson.
