Reading Logs
You can also keep a list on the old reading logs of books read towards the 100 book challenge! Some kids are super close to reading 100 books at home! Please make sure your child is reading each night. If you need a new log for this, please let me know or have your child ask me for one. ANY BOOK your child reads can be added to the log (not just the ones they come home with).
Blue Reading Bags
Please continue to practice the skills in the blue book bags with your child every night. Then make sure you remind your child to put their book bag in their backpack so it can come to school the next day. The bags need to be brought back to school every day and failure to bring them back to school will result in your child not being able to bring new books home.
When practicing the books at home we want them to practice decoding or sounding out the words they don’t know. We also want them to practice reading with fluency. This means that your child will read the books as if they were talking. This doesn’t mean memorizing what the book says but rather looking at the words and reading them and trying to use your talking voice.
Please also work on comprehension. This is how they are understanding what they read about. Ask them 3 things about the book. Also try to compare/contrast, infer, and make connections to the book.
Sight Words
Please keep practicing words in the word baggies! Make sure your kiddo brings them back each day!
Here is an activity to try at home when practicing power words:
Mystery Words: Write power words on white paper in white crayon. Have your child color over with a marker or watercolor over it and read the word.
When determining if your child knows a power word or not, we want them to be able to read the word with automaticity. This means that they can look at the word and instantly be able to tell me what the word is without having to sound it out. If your child still needs to sound out the sight word, then that means they need some more practice with that word. If your child already knows and can read all the power words with automaticity, then help them to spell the words so they can use them in their writing.
Students will need to know 75 Power Words by the end of the year. (I previously thought it was 85 but it's 75).
