MID-WEEK TO ROTORUA
Via Art-of Outdoors, Mamaku Blue & Ohinemutu
Thursday, 28 June
Art of Outdoors
Our first visit on this tour will be to a short presentation at Art-of Outdoors In Pyes Pa. This venue sells garden & art sculptures from scrap metal. They don't actually make the sculptures, but design & commission them & import them from overseas. We will have a short talk & be able to view some smaller sculptures & ask questions.
Mamaku Blue
One of life's greatest antioxidants
Ohinemutu
Visitors are welcome to walk around the living village of Ohinemutu at no charge, to view the cooking arrangements over the boiling hot water vents & to see the outdoor bathing sheds. The paths must be kept to at all times.
"Ohinemutu became the main centre for the Rotorua region in the early 1870's. Visitors, including royalty, arrived at the bustling settlement before going on to visit the Pink & White Terraces at Lake Tarawera, & to experience the healing waters of Rotorua.Today...the large meeting house provides the setting for many significant occasions for the people of this area.
Ohinemutu is home to the Te Papaiouru Marae & the Tama-te-Kapua meeting house named after the paramount chief & captain of the Te Arawa canoe. The carving on the large meeting house is exquisite & highlighted by hundreds of inlaid shiny paua shells. The house is not open to the public, but you are welcome to enjoy it from the outside.
Towards the lake's edge is the historic & magnificently decorated St Faith's Church, which was completed in 1914. While its exterior is Tudor style, the church interior has a strong Maori influence, with beautiful carvings & woven panels. A memorable feature is a window etched with the image of Jesus wearing a Maori cloak - he appears to walk across the surface of the lake." A coin donation into the box at the doorway is appreciated, to enable upkeep, if you visit the church.
We will proceed to the CBD & let you loose for two hours. Perhaps you would like to lunch at one of the great eateries in Eat Street. Perhaps you just want to indulge in your favourite hobby, shopping!! It's up to you.
