21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
Here in H-town, collars are more blue than white and we know all too well about how WORK WORK WORK plays a vital role in not only contributing to our personal growth and success, but to that of our entire community as well. In the SCOH, this holds true both in the classroom and on the turf, court, diamond and course! All 21 sports know what it means to be a BRICKIE ... Passion, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Effort. The exact same characteristics displayed by workers who are honored each Labor Day! WE are 1 TEAM ... WE are HOBART!
I hope everyone enjoys the day off tomorrow - you've earned it. As for now ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Girls Golf
Head Coach Gary Roach always says, "The best motivation comes from within" ... it appears that motivation is starting to spill out onto the course for our girls!! Scores are going down and confidence should be going up ... as conference play heats up over the next few weeks, this could be really fun!!
With the W, the Lady Brickies improve to 5-6 on the season overall and still sit undefeated in NCC action at 1-0!

Soccer
On Monday, the Lady Brickies were scheduled to square off against the Hammond High Wildcats (what team?), but as the Eurythmics might sing, "Here comes the rain again" and the game was postponed.
Wednesday, Hobart played the GAME OF THE WEEK at home against Michigan City. During the 1st 40 minutes, the name of the game was D-D-D-DEFENSE as both teams were fiercely protecting their goals. With neither team able to generate much offense, the score was tied 0-0 at the half. If this game was a novel, it would be called "A Tale of Two Halves" because the 2nd half was completely different than the first ... instead of a defensive struggle, it was the most FRANTIC FORTY MINUTES these eyes have seen this year! Back and forth it went ... in the 1st 6 minutes, Senior Lauren RomeGOAL (... this last name is more fitting for her than Romeo) put one in the back of the net for the Lady Brickies and then Michigan City answered with one of their own to tie it at 1-1! Then we saw 32 minutes of exhausting action as both teams put pressure on goal and fired away ... GREAT defense, PHENOMENAL passing, AWESOME teamwork - it was simply a GREAT GAME! With the clock winding down inside 2 minutes and the score still knotted at 1, senior Liesl "Clutch" Martin launched a shot from 25 yards out ... it hit the Michigan City goalie in the hands as she knocked it down, but miraculously the ball got by and rolled across the line for the go-ahead GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! The Brickies led 2-1 with 1:36 on the clock and even though the Lady Wolves threatened in the waning moments, Hobart held on for a THRILLING VICTORY in front of the hometown fans! It was INCREDIBLE ... I'm exhausted just reliving it :).
As frantic, intense and competitive as the game was, the IHSAA received an EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOR REPORT from one of the 3 officials on the game proving our Lady Brickies are not only fierce in their competitiveness, but also their sportsmanship! #BRICKIEPRIDE
This was Hobart's 1st win of the season in 3 tries! The girls will be back in action twice next week - LET'S GO!!!
Boys
In their lone contest of the week, Hobart traveled north to the Hammond neighborhood of Robertsdale to battle the area #7-ranked Clark Pioneers. With the breeze coming in strong off Wolf Lake, the Brickies went toe-to-toe with one of the regions elite teams! The first half was tough as the host Pioneers were more aggressive and attacked the goal relentlessly to take an early lead 3-0 after one half of play. Hobart fought back in the 2nd 40 minutes, bringing the fight right at 'em! With the Brickie offense on the attack, senior Shaun Mirr scored two GOOOOAAAALLLLLS!! Unfortunately, it just wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit and the Brickies dropped the non-conference game by the final score of 5-2. The two goals by Mirr add to his team leading total of 5 for the season.
With the loss, Hobart fell to 1-2-1. This is a BIG week for the Brickies as NCC play begins Wednesday at The Brickyard against Munster!

Boys Tennis
The Brickies are 2-1 so far this fall and looking very solid from top to bottom! In fact, with a few newbies joining in the last 2 weeks to add some depth, these boys could be DANGEROUS when the post-season rolls around :) LET'S GO BRICKS!!

Cross Country
Girls
There's a reason they call it Sunset HILL ... lots of up & down ... which makes this course a GREAT challenge for our Lady Brickies in preparation for what we'll see at Lemon Lake County Park in the post-season! Sophomore Sydney Belk continued her STELLAR START to the season as she placed 8th overall in a time of 22:58.38! Joining Sydney in Hobart's top 5 were senior Lauren Romeo (that's right folks ... she's competing in both soccer AND cross country this fall ... AND maintains a 4.0+ GPA ... simply AMAZING!), and sophomores Mikayla Fuentes, Ja'Diah Belk and Emma Ramirez. Something that stood out was how each of the Lady Brickies FINISHED the race ... showing some BRICKIE TOUGHNESS and a KICK that tells us these girls have HEART and GUTS to put it on the line ... or as British singer-songwriter Billy Ocean might say, "When the goin' gets tough, the tough get goin'!"
Much like boys tennis, the numbers have grown for girls cross country since school started and once this group is full strength ... another deep post-season RUN may be in the cards!
Boys
At Sunset Hills Farm, the boys looked to build on their performance a week ago at Wheeler ... and from the looks of it, the foundation for these Bricks is SOLID as our boys turned in another strong finish early in the season! Junior Bruce "Almighty" Leipart was the INDIVIDUAL WINNER on Tuesday racing to a new personal best time of 17:20.61!! With senior Bryan Cherry still on the shelf nursing a lower leg issue, the Brickies are in need of a front runner and Bruce has DELIVERED! Rounding out Hobart's top 5 were freshman Ryan Wein (20th place), junior Darrin Johnson and sophomores Donovan Ruiz and Jacob Marcayda.
This group is close ... once healthy, these guys are going to be a FORCE ... and no one gets runners ready to perform at their best better than Coach A!

Volleyball
On Monday, the Lady Brickies welcomed River Forest to the friendly city for a rematch of last Saturday's pool play at the Hobart Invite. In the 1st match up, Hobart won 2-0. In the 2nd, there was one more game, but the results were the same as the Lady Brickies WON 3-0! In a competitive match throughout, Hobart won 25-21, 25-20 and 25-20 to earn their 3rd sweep in as many contests after doing the same to both Portage and Bowman Academy a week earlier! Junior Sasha Thomas led the way defensively with 8 digs on the night and on the offensive side, it was junior Jessica Fazekas with a team high 27 assists and senior Addison "The Hammer" Metts with 25 kills! Senior Paige Cooper chipped in 5 assists and sophomore Hannah Mathis backed up Metts with 8 kills of her own!
Tuesday, it was another rematch from the Hobart Invite ... only this time, the Lady Brickies had some payback on their minds. The Wheeler Lady Bearcats defeated Hobart in heart-breaking fashion in the title match of the Invite - would "round 2" be a different story?
Well, much like the first match-up, this one was also an INSTANT CLASSIC! It was back-and-forth during the 1st game with Wheeler ultimately earning the win 25-23. The Lady Brickies BATTLED back in the 2nd game to win 25-21 to tie things up! In the 3rd game, it was ALL HOBART as our girls put things together and DOMINATED the Lady Bearcats 25-13!! Following the script from the tournament, Wheeler would rally in the 4th game and tie things back up at 2-2 with a 25-19 victory. So ... it all came down to the 5th and deciding game ... first one to 15 points would be the winner. OH MY GOSH THIS WAS INTENSE! Unfortunately, just like in the tournament, it was Wheeler who would gain the upper hand and eventually win a nail-biter 15-12 and thus earn the "W" for the night. It was a terrific game - one that didn't end the way we hoped it would, but also one that will give our girls some great experience that will pay off down the road (... or as wrestling coach Jason Cook would say, the #BRICKRODE). The more times our girls face this kind of adversity, the better we will be when it counts for real in the post-season.
The girls have a saying on their shirts this year that goes something like this, "Some wish for it, we work for it" ... it's fitting, this is a blue-collar town that knows something about WORK WORK WORK and these girls are doing a great job representing H-town!
The Lady Brickies are currently 6-2 with a HUGE week coming up as NCC play begins!
