ADPY 7500: Redesigned
Psychiatry Clerkship (Transition from 6 to 4 weeks)
DECEMBER 2016
Welcome to the First Ever Psychiatry Clerkship Redesign Newsletter!
I'm happy to present the first newsletter dedicated to the UMN Medical School Psychiatry Clerkship transition, planned to start May 8, 2017. Since we are still working on many changes to the clerkship, I thought having a regular newsletter every month leading up to May would be a helpful way to keep in touch with developments as we move ahead with the transition.
First and foremost, I'd like to thank each of you for the dedicated work you give to the medical school in teaching our medical students during their clerkship, as well as the support you give to the teaching staff at each of your sites. The clerkship would not be able to function without your time and talents, and we greatly appreciate your efforts.
While there are many challenges ahead with the redesign process, I believe the overall teaching of psychiatry will largely remain the same. Our medical students consistently have given their psychiatry experience high ratings and see it as a valuable part of their education. My hope is that the redesign continues to support this high quality teaching and refreshes other aspects of the clerkship that will give students a richer experience overall.
Please always feel free to contact me or Serena Sherrell directly if you have ideas, questions or concerns about the transition process. Our contact information is below. Once again thank you for your work with our students!
Transition from 6 to 4 weeks (begins 5/8/17)
Clinical Site Directors: Listed below are the core clinical experiences that the 3rd year medical students will be offered at each of the sites. Please let Serena know if there should be any changes to what we have listed below for your site.
- AMRTC: 4 weeks on adult inpatient
- HCMC: 4 weeks on adult inpatient
- Regions: 4 weeks either on adult inpatient or day treatment
- UMMC: 4 weeks either on adult inpatient, child inpatient or day treatment
- VA: 4 weeks on adult inpatient or the consult-liaison team
Lecture Series
As discussed at the last Site Director's meeting in April 2016, we plan to centralize the lecture series and focus the lectures to meet standardized clerkship goals as requested by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges). Starting in May 2017, medical students from all of the sites will travel to the UMMC site on Wednesday afternoons to attend the lecture series. We have reserved the Brennan Center at Fairview Riverside from 1:30-5:30pm and currently plan to hold 10 lectures that will run monthly for each of the periods.
We are looking for Lecture Champions and Lecturers!
If you or anyone at your site is interested in working on one of the lectures we have below, please let us know. There are many ways to support the lecture series, from helping to design the lecture objectives and format to just coming in 1-2 times/year to give one of the lectures to the students. We welcome all levels of interest in helping this part of the clerkship! For more information, please contact me by email or phone.
Anxiety Disorders and PTSD, Bipolar Disorders, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Depression, Geriatric and Organic Disorders, MSE and Motivational Interviewing, Psychopharmacology, Schizophrenia, Substance Use, Psychotherapy.
Shelf Exam Review
Serena recently sent out a Doodle Poll for date/times that you would be available in February for a shelf exam review. Please respond as soon as you can so we can know your interest and availability. We will do our best to accommodate your requests. Please note, this is a once-a-year viewing, as the NBME only allows clerkships to view their Shelf exams once every 365 days.
