7/8 Academy

Weekly News - October 8, 2021

Dear 7/8 Academy Families,

We were really excited this week to have our first assembly since the beginning of the pandemic, but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. I know that students were very disappointed, but we are looking to reschedule the assembly for next week. Next week we will also have Homecoming dress up days, listed later in the newsletter. I’m looking forward to seeing the students’ school spirit!

Please don’t forget, we are holding in-person conferences next week on Wednesday October 13th from 3:30 - 8:00pm, or you can now sign up for virtual conferences which will be held on Tuesday October 19th from 3:30 - 8:00pm. The directions for signing up for conferences are detailed later in the newsletter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office.

Have a great weekend!

NWEA MAP Testing

Students will take the NWEA MAP test following the schedule listed below. This is an assessment that students take three times per year to give us information about their progress in both math and reading. The scores on this assessment can also be used to help us determine appropriate student placement in math and ELA classes. Please talk with your student about doing their best during the testing periods.

Tuesday 10/12 - NWEA Reading Test

1st - 3rd NWEA Reading Test with 3rd period teacher. Students will report to their 3rd period teacher at the beginning of the day.

4th - 6th Normal afternoon schedule

Wednesday 10/13 - NWEA Math Test

1st - 3rd Normal morning schedule

4th - 6th NWEA Math Test with 4th period teacher

Please remind your student to bring their fully charged chromebook and charging cord every day. This will be especially important on NWEA testing days - October 12th and 13th, as every student will need to be on a school issued chromebook.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

We will hold conferences on Wednesday October 13th and Tuesday October 19th from 3:30 - 8:00 pm.

Wednesday 10/13 conferences will be in-person, open house style. All families should park in the back parking lot and enter through the gymnasium doors. Please bring your student’s schedule with you.

Tuesday 10/19 conferences will be virtual, via Zoom. Directions to Schedule Virtual Conferences are below.

Masks are required for everyone that attends the in-person conferences on Wednesday 10/13. Anyone who is uncomfortable wearing a mask is asked to attend the virtual conferences via Zoom on Tuesday 10/19.

We will be using the Conference Scheduler feature in Skyward to allow you to sign up for time slots. In order to do so, you will need to log into Skyward. The login screen can be accessed from the school webpage at www.lakeviewspartans.org. Click on the “Parents” Tab at the top and “Skyward Parent Access” will be the first item listed under the parent resources.

You will need your username and password information to log into Skyward. If you do not have that information please contact the 7/8 Office at 565-3900. Also, if you do not have access to technology to complete the process, call the office and we will be happy to assist you.

Once logged into Skyward, the process is fairly simple. We have linked a video put out by Skyward to assist you. You can access that video by clicking this link, or by navigating to the following web address.

If you experience difficulty with this process, call the office and we will be glad to assist you. We do ask that you complete this process by 5:00pm the evening before the conference date.

Zoom links for each teacher will be sent out next week.

2021 Spring MSTEP Scores

The Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP, is an assessment designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. These standards broadly outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be prepared to enter the workplace, career education training, and college. The MSTEP is administered to students each spring in grades 3-8, and grade 11.

For students who took the Spring 2021 M-STEP, the individual data reports have arrived! All of the parent reports will be available to view on Skyward soon. If you would like to see the results sooner, you may pick up a copy of the report during in-person conferences on October 13th, or they will be available in the 7/8 Academy Office at any time.

Additionally, a helpful companion to this report is the M-STEP Parent Guide, which provides grade level descriptions of the assessed standards and what the student will be expected to learn in the next school year for each tested grade. To access the Parent Report Guides, go to this link on the Michigan Department of Education website.

East Coast Trip

Attention Parents and 8th Graders!!

The East Coast Trip is Back! (providing it is safe to travel in large groups, to large cities in 2022). Informational meeting for the East Coast Trip is October 11th at 6:30 pm in the middle school cafeteria. Please contact Mrs. Haas at jocoolhaas@outlook.com if you have any questions. New Quarantine Guidelines

Beginning Monday, September 20, 2021, parents/guardians whose child has been quarantined by the health department may choose one of three options for their student’s return to school. Students who are vaccinated do not have to quarantine or test.

  • Option 1 - 10-day quarantine and monitor symptoms for 14 days

  • Option 2 - Return to school after 7-day quarantine with a negative antigen or PCR test taken (at home) on day 6-7 after exposure (back in school on day 7) and monitor symptoms for 14 days

  • Option 3 - Stay in class with daily COVID-19 antigen test with negative result for 7 days (at home) and monitor symptoms for 14 days

***If you are choosing option 2 or option 3, you will need to obtain a form from the school office for your student to return.

At-home testing requirements - (1) retain all test results for a period of at least 30 days; (2) a copy of the test documentation must be provided to a representative of the CCPHD upon request. Parents choosing Options 2 or 3 are responsible to secure required tests for their child. The school district is working to obtain COVID tests from the state which, if available, will be provided at no cost to the families of quarantined Lakeview students.

Student Work During an Extended Absence

All teachers will be communicating with families about how students can access their work during an extended absence such as a quarantine, illness, or suspension. Most teachers will be utilizing Schoology to house the classroom assignments.

We realize that 7th grade students do not have the same experience with Schoology as 8th grade students, so if they haven’t done so already, 7th grade teachers will be working with students to familiarize them with Schoology.

If you have an updated email address in Skyward, you would have received an email with your login information to your student’s Schoology account. Please watch the video below for step by step instructions.

Parent Video for Logging into Schoology

PTA will be meeting the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:30 and because of covid we will have zoom meetings for now. Join us on zoom October 14th here.
