King's Korner
Dr. Joana King, Assistant Superintendent
I recently read an article by Margery B Ginsberg, PhD, on parental involvement. Dr. Ginsberg, a University of Washington professor, maintains that while parental involvement is vital to the high success of a student, as well as a school system, it has largely been defined as a one-way street.
One of the most challenging tasks is to refine parental involvement as a two way street. What is it that parents and teachers need to understand about working together? And why is this partnering so important to student success? Dr. Ginsberg’s article, Invaluable Allies: Partnering for Student Success, seeks to answer these and other questions while refining what teachers and parents need/want from each other. So much of the time, we think of teaching as a one-way process. Not only do teachers impart information to students who, in turn, develop knowledge and skills, they also teach parents how to facilitate their children’s learning. But Ginsberg rightly points out several assurances that parents want to receive from teachers. One of those assurances is that “the teacher is going to respect and learn from families.” And I would hope in turn that the families were going to respect and learn from the teacher.
One way to foster a true partnership is for parents and teachers to engage in authentic problem solving together when the need arises. This, as Ginsberg states, is a “shared, creative process in which teachers don’t need to, nor should they, have all the answers.” When parents have the opportunity to participate in problem-solving, they also become part of the solution and the ultimate win is for the student.
One of the most powerful sections of Ginsberg’s article can be found when she talks about behaviors that bolster partnerships. These are behaviors for both teachers and parents. Whether you are a parent or a teacher there are behaviors that are helpful to a partnership and those that are harmful to a partnership. Below is a graphic from the article.
What are your thoughts on a true authentic partnership with your child’s teacher? What do you feel are the barriers? I would love to get your input and thoughts. Please email me at jking@clintoncardinals.org if you would like to enter the discourse.

"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLES
An Amazing Partnership
Submitted by: Sherri Swope, Henry Elementary Principal
Henry Elementary loves their partnership with Bright Futures building partner, Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare. This partnership provides many opportunities for not only students, but also the employees of GVMH and their patients.
In December, Henry Elementary second grade students had the opportunity to provide some smiles and laughs for patients at GVMH. School staff recorded 2nd grade students sharing an encouraging message as well as telling Christmas jokes. This video was then placed on iPads and provided to oncology patients to watch during their infusion treatments at GVMH.
At the end of each month, Henry Elementary hosts a Student of the Month assembly. Students are recognized for outstanding character behavior in the areas of kindness, integrity, honesty, etc. GVMH staff and teachers introduce a trait each month, teach the students about the trait, and connect it to the real world. Through this collaboration, students have discovered that many Positive Behavior Support (PBS) traits are the same in the school setting as they are for hospital employees.
Henry Elementary is very excited about an upcoming community service project! Henry Elementary students will be shooting another video! CHS senior, Nathan Griffey, who has an emphasis in video production, has agreed to help our students make “Behaviors of Excellence” training videos for GVMH staff.
Each quarter students with perfect attendance are honored for their dedication to school. Earlier this month, Chef Anthony and Karen Elmer, from GVMH, hosted a catered lunch and puppet show for 66 students! What a great treat and incentive for kids to come to school ready to learn every day! Henry Elementary's attendance goal is to have 93.5% of students at school 90% of the time. Remember parents......attendance is counted by the minute. Every minute matters!
On Friday, January 19th, Henry Elementary celebrated the third annual Donuts With Dads event. Dads were invited to come to school, participate in activities, and enjoy a donut with their child. A huge thank you to Angie Lawson for organizing the event, GVMH for purchasing 62 dozen donuts, over 300 dads for coming to support their children, and the 17 volunteer dads that came to help.
As you can see, GVMH is a huge asset to the students and staff of Henry Elementary. We appreciate their partnership and dedication to ensuring success for all students!
Hitting the Target at CIS
Submitted by: Clinton Intermediate School
The Clinton Intermediate School Archery Team is in its 7th year of competition. Students in 4th and 5th grade learn about archery in PE class and then are able to try out for the team in late November. This year the team has a lot of new faces and the school is excited to see each of them improve during the season.
The first tournament was held January 13th at CHS. The CIS students competed with approximately 70 elementary students from 7 other elementary school teams. The CIS team finished in 1st place with a score of 2,656. Kason Himes took home a 2nd place medal while Michael Chapa finished in 3rd place for elementary boys. Jacey Peery finished in 2nd place for elementary girls with a personal best score.
Tournaments are held most Saturdays during the months of January and February, leading up to the STATE Tournament in late March. The team's score of 2,656 from their first tournament has allowed them to continue their 6 year qualifying streak for the State Tournament.
