Goal Setting Tips For Our Brickies!


Here are some tips that can help students set effective goals:

1. Goals are intentional commitments to action, not a wish list.

"I want to get an A" lacks power. "I will work hard (How), to earn an A," is intentional and powerful.

2. Be specific.

“Find help" is too general. "I will find 5 resources that will help me before the end of the month" is better.

3. Share your goals with someone who cares if you reach them.

Sharing your intentions with your parents, your best friend, or your teacher will help ensure success.

4. Write down your goals and put them where you will see them.

The more often you read your list, the more results you get.

5. Review and revise your list.

Experiment with different ways of stating your goals. Goal setting improves with practice!

You can work with your students by helping them set specific, measurable, achieveable, results-focused, and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T.) Goals!
Our students can login into Google and access these forms. You can do this together and have them submit to their teacher. Monitor progress together!

'Gabby's Gifts' Gives Back In A BIG Way!

Gabriela Mazzula is an 11-year-old Hobart Middle School Brickie who started her charity company, 'Gabby's Gifts' about 3 years ago. She creates crafts and wreaths to sell throughout the year at different functions, events, and through her Facebook page, Gabby's Gifts!


When Gabby started this mission, she did it with the idea of giving back to the community. Gabby loves to craft and thought she could take what she enjoys doing, sell them, and use the profits to give back to those in need. When she started, it was a blessing to many. As the years went on she raised more and more, then used the monies to buy necessities and toys to gift to others. This year, she raised an astounding $20,000!!


Grab the tissues, because this is where it hits the heart. Gabby is our present-day Santa Claus! She humbly went shopping with her mom and grandfather where they bought carts full of toys, backpacks, dolls, action figures, slippers, small appliances, clothing, and gift cards. She then went to St. Jude's and delivered bags full to those that she will never meet, but that she knows will be ever so thankful for her donation. Gabby also donated bags full to Brother's Keeper, and the Ronald McDonald House! Gabby has single-handedly given a memorable holiday to hundreds of families and we could not be more proud to call her a Brickie. Thank you for ALL that you continually do, Gabby, and way to #BeExcellentOnPurpose!

HHS Theatre Department Is Advancing To State!

From Mrs. Nelson:


It is with IMMENSE pleasure that I announce Hobart High Theatre Department will be advancing to the state competition in Marian Indiana in January. Hobart hosted the regional competition and missed first place by only 1 point! Third place was 8 points behind.


HHS performed a cutting of the play "The Laramie Project" which was written after the tragic beating and death of Matthew Shepherd in Laramie, Wyoming. The play was based on the interviews and events that occurred in the year and a half following this tragedy. Beautifully written and incredibly powerful, the play tells the story of the twenty-one-year-old University of Wyoming student who was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside the town of Laramie. The play explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.


We had the honor of hosting the regional competition on Saturday. This project was directed by Theresa Dietrich and Linny Foerg, and I cannot be prouder of the end result. While I organized and prepared for hosting this event, Theresa and Linny prepared the kids to perform. I chose not to watch rehearsals and waited to see the production during this competition. I have had many wonderful moments as director, but what I experienced today, as an audience member was profound. I was moved to tears at the beautiful piece of art that was put to life on our stage.

Now we prepare for state competition in January, with the possibility of competing at the International Thespian competition which will be held at IU in Bloomington this summer. Please help congratulate all involved.

Their Essays Are Going Far!

Each year our Brickies have an opportunity to compete in the National Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Essay contests and this year is no exception! We had dozens of students write amazing essays based on this year's theme. The High School's Voice of Democracy theme was "America: Where do we go from here?" while the Patriot's Pen's focus was "How Can I Be A Good American?" From here they were submitted to our local VFW Post 5365 who listened and read all of the essays and painfully had to select the top 3 - it was tough!


Our winners had the privilege of reading or playing their essays at our Veterans Day programs and were each honored to be chosen to do so. Our top winner's essays continued on to advance to the District level where our very own high school student, Emma Ramirez, and middle school student, Shu King Zheng took the top place again, and are advancing to the State level! The 2nd place for the District went to another Brickie, Jim Lahaie, who proudly walked away with a cash prize.


How proud we are of our Brickies and their mature knowledge and embodiment of what this Country represents, is immeasurable. They are phenomenal role models and proud Americans. Honored to have you as Brickies.

We The People Competition Gets Fierce!

The excitement, nervousness, and eagerness to compete was all over the room when our Brickies were gearing up for the STATE 'We The People' competition where they competed against 14 other middle school districts. After a good night's rest and an extra early morning down in Indianapolis, our students and their teacher, Mrs. Hairston, made their way to the competition and awaited their turn.

At the competition, students held a simulated congressional hearing where they 'testify' before a panel of judges. Here they demonstrate their understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. They did amazing! Each spoke with poise, knowledge, and confidence in each point they spoke about. Teacher, Mrs. Hairston, and Principal, Mrs. Neeley, happily watched from the sidelines as they represented the Brickies with pride.


After two rounds, the results were in. As everyone listened to the host and the guest speaker, their anticipation grew. Finally, it was time, 'for Unit 6 Highest Score - Hobart Middle School!" They did it! They were the highest score for the Unit 6 panel. While they may not have brought home the championship trophy, they have improved greatly and did a fantastic job!

Snapper, Luke, Is Awarded A Patrick Mannelly Award!

Hobart High School sophomore, Luke Granzow, is known by many for his friendship, personality, academics, and being the long snapper on the football team! He puts a lot of hard work in both on and off of the field year round and currently has a 4.2 GPA.


Early this year, one of our football coaches nominated Luke for the Patrick Mannelly 65 Honor Roll award. This award is presented to high school athletes across the Chicagoland area who exemplify excellence, integrity, effectiveness, teamwork, and balance. Luke is a true example of all of these and was presented with this award! He was then recognized at an awards ceremony where he met Patrick Mannelly himself along with Lance Briggs, Frank Thomas, and Dave Kaplan!


Congratulations on this achievement, Luke, and keep working hard and focusing on your goals! "All my life, I want to be a Brickie! Work! Work! Work!"

Our Early Learning Center Is All About Giving!

December was a month of giving! Our ELC families donated to food and toy drives and you all BLEW us away with your generosity!

The Food Drive was a huge success! The Helping Hands Club at The ELC is making HUGE impacts across the community this holiday season! They conducted a food drive for the local pantry to help those in need during the holidays and cold winter months - look at all the items they brought in! We thank you for your food donations!


Their toy drive was also a huge success! Mrs. Helminski headed up the toy drive and has a special message to everyone who contributed.


“WOW! I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the ELC families. Hobart Tri Kappa and I thank you immensely for the AMAZING toy donations. This toy contribution will help bring lots of smiles on Christmas morning for approximately 500 Hobart children. “

Junior Achievement Program with our JROTC!



The Junior Achievement Program is an exercise that has proven to be one of the most valuable of the year for our cadets. While our students are not professional teachers, they take the preparation very seriously. Junior Achievement (JA) has 104 local JA Areas across the nation, and together they are the nation's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures, and make smart academic and economic choices. JA's programs—in the core content areas of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy—ignite the spark in young people to experience and realize the opportunities and realities of work and life in the 21st century.


Here are some numbers to put it into perspective…

Over 3 days,

In 5 different grade levels,

25 lessons were taught

in 56 different classrooms

by 100 cadets

to over 1400 students!

Each of our students worked diligently and professionally to prepare for and teach the lessons. They not only taught the students in each of the classes some very valuable information, but learned so much themselves. The insights from teachers, administrators, and the students themselves helped everyone grow and better themselves for what the future can hold. Great job to all of the JROTC for their hard work, dedication, teamwork, and impressive teaching!

Join the Battle to End Vaping

"This is Quitting" is a free and anonymous text messaging program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind quit program incorporates messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes. Our messages show the real side of quitting, both the good and the bad, to help young people feel motivated, inspired, and supported throughout their quitting process. We also send young people evidence-based tips and strategies to quit and stay quit. This is Quitting is tailored based on age (within 13 to 24 years old) and product usage to give teens and young adults appropriate recommendations about quitting.


To enroll in This is Quitting, teens and young adults text DITCHVAPE to 88709. The first messages they receive will ask for their age and product usage so that they are able to receive relevant messages. Users receive one age-appropriate message per day tailored to their enrollment date or quit date, which can be set and reset via text message.
