The Dust Bowl

The People who Fought to Survive

Two stories, same Dust Bowl

Years of Dust: The Story of the Dust Bowl by Albert Marrin

This nonfiction book describes the Dust Bowl with heartfelt stories, photography, period artwork/propaganda, and facts. It transforms the event in history to a story of humanity and struggle.

The Storm in the Barn by Matt Phelan

This graphic novel is historical fiction which is set during the Dust Bowl. Jack is the main character whose curiosity and imagination reveal a story of overcoming the Storm King and living in and through the Dust Bowl.

What struck me the most in both of these books were the scenes of humanity. The characters displayed great emotion and clarity for the dire situation. There is a sense of deepness and angst in the facial expressions. While reading these stories, I found myself comparing the people/characters.

The Setting

This is a photo of soil drifting. The storms took over family farms and destroyed crops.
