Digital Footprint is Never Erased

Students hear pitfalls of online posts

Quakertown Community School District middle school students learned about their digital footprint this week and how any post they make to a social media site or any photo downloaded to a cell phone can permanently impact their reputation.

Brian Hendrzak, a Richland Township Police Officer and one of two School Resource Officers in QCSD, gave presentations to students at the Sixth Grade Center and Strayer Middle School about the importance of watching their words and actions in the digital world. “Everything you do online leaves a digital footprint behind, which ultimately can be traced,” Officer Hendrzak said. “If you do not want the entire world to see it, do not post it.”

Strayer wins Field Hockey Championship

Big picture
Coaches Peach Draper and Lauren Sculley are proud to congratulate the Strayer Middle School Field Hockey Conference Champions.

The girls were 8-0 this year winning every game in their conference by three goals or more. They also outscored their opponents 58-2 in conference play. This is a group of super-talented athletes and girls that work so well as a team. Their passing game was incredible and they knew where to go to support one another.

This level of talent came from a ton of offseason work and the leadership from four incredible captains: Madison Kocher, Paige Longacre, Cassidy Landis and Sunny Draper. These four athletes have been playing together since they were young and all four were also part of the Strayer undefeated lacrosse team.

We are extremely proud of our athletes and know with 15 8th graders moving up, the future is very bright for Quakertown Field hockey.

Shakespeare 'comes alive' for QCHS students

After a two-year absence due to COVID, Shakespeare returned to the Quakertown Community High School’s Performing Arts Center this week as more than 100 students witnessed the DeSales University theater program’s performance of Hamlet.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to see the actors live,” QCHS senior Bryce Widdoss said. “It helps to understand the storyline and to see how the actors operate on stage, which is amazing.”

The efforts of teacher Nick Burch have secured previous visits from the Linny Fowler WillPower Tour, the centerpiece of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival's educational programming, to bring Shakespeare’s plays to life for QCHS students. This year, however, DeSales, with a grant already secured, reached out to him to schedule its performance.

Here's the full Shakespeare story.

Fab Lab visits Pfaff

Big picture
The Bucks County Intermediate Unit’s Fab Lab, which gives students an opportunity to learn from cutting-edge technology designed to inspire and encourage them to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) fields, is at Pfaff Elementary School this week.

Second-graders, the priority grade level this session, engaged in a digital fabrication project, sketching a healthy community. Students traced their sketches with a Sharpie marker before Dr. Lindsey Sides, the IU’s Supervisor of STEAM Education, imported them into Corel Draw and prepared them to be engraved and cut on the laser machine. They also learned how to code a robot. Students in grades one, three, and four were also exposed to the Fab Lab this week.

Treat or Treat Scavenger hunt held at QCHS

Best Buddies, Quakertown Community High School’s most popular club, recently held its Fall Festival Trick or Treat Scavenger Hunt. More than 200 students traveled the school’s hallways, maps in hand, searching for goodies.

The club’s mission is dedicated to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With the help of advisors Jennifer Honrado and Megan McGinty, Best Buddies provides club members opportunities for one-to-one friendships; leadership development for students with IDD; makes all students feel valued, and helps improve life skills.

“Each meeting we ask students to switch groups and make new friends,” Mrs. Honorado said.

The Quakertown Community Education Foundation recently approved Best Buddies’ $1,000 mini-grant request for its Spring Fling. According to QCEF President Stephanie Zajkowski “The Board was very impressed by the incredible growth the club has experienced over the past two years and recognizes the financial strain such growth can create. Everyone felt this club clearly provides opportunities not traditionally available to students inside or outside of the classroom. We hope this grant in conjunction with your other fundraising activities enables the club to achieve everything you hoped to this year.”

2022 Lens on Litter Photo Contest

Since 1984, Pennsylvania Resources Council has held an annual Lens on Litter Photo Contest, not to glorify litter but to bring attention to the litter problem in communities across Pennsylvania. Contestants are eligible for monetary prizes up to $500. Contest deadline is October 31, 2022.

Amateur students (through 12th grade) and adults are asked to submit photos of unusual or unsightly litter in their Pennsylvania communities. Photos should demonstrate how litter threatens public health and safety, scenic beauty, property values, the environment, pets or wildlife. Entries will be judged on six criteria: anti-litter message, originality, photographic technique, quality of photo, originality of title and severity of the litter. Contestants are also encouraged to safely initiate a clean-up of the subject area and provide a photo of the results of their efforts for additional judging points.

Entries (limit five per person, no smaller than 4x6 and no larger than 8x10) should be sent to PRC Gene Capaldi Lens on Litter Contest, 1671 North Providence Road, Media, PA 19063. High resolution digital submissions may be sent to lensonlitter@prc.org. All entries (including digital) must include the entrant’s name, address, telephone number, email address, title given to photo, location of litter site and how you learned about the contest. Students should also include age, grade and name of school. All photos may be used by PRC at their discretion.
