"New Year, New You"

A big shout-out to our Leadership students who attended the CASL conference last spring and advocated to bring inspirational speaker Kevin Laue to Mendenhall on Thursday, Jan. 11th. Kevin's theme was "New Year, New You," and Leadership introduced the theme on Monday with inspirational quotes, hand-stamps, and activities that encourage students to be their best selves. What a wonderful way to usher in the new year. A special thanks to the PTSA for helping Leadership to underwrite the cost of the assembly. Be sure to ask your child about Kevin!

Accelerated Reader (AR) Update

This year core teachers have undertaken additional training in maximizing the use of the Accelerated Reader program that the PTSA so generously provides. The STAR reports that teachers will be providing for their students in the coming weeks show how they are progressing in lexile levels (which measure text complexity) and zones of proximal development (zpd), which measure the optimal grade level of reading material for a particular student. This information is critical for students as they prepare for high school and beyond. It can inform students and parents of their progress and preparation for college/career. The area of greatest weakness for our current students on the standardized assessments is reading comprehension, so please help your child to take reading seriously. It is key to academic success.

Early Dismissal Days

Parents, please note that on the following days -- Jan. 30, Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 -- dismissal will be at 1:31 PM. These early dismissal days will allow staff to take time for professional development on recent trends in drug use/abuse among minors, progress monitoring of students, review of school mission and vision, just to mention a few staff needs.

The Play's the Thing!

Thanks to director and parent Sharon Pizer, a group of students is putting on a show for February 16th. More info to come in the next few weeks, but after a long hiatus of no drama productions at Mendenhall, we are happy to report that this group is hard at work preparing to "put on a show."
