Mr. Posick's Friday email

November 1, 2013

As we approach the end of the quarter next week, fall conferences are right around the corner. The nights of conferences are Thursday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 12th. Both nights conferences will occur from 4:30-8:00PM. Families with students in grades 4-6 will be scheduling conferences online this year through Skyward. Please look for information about scheduling conferences in an email from Mr. Russ next week as well as a paper note being sent home. 7th and 8th grade teachers will be having "arena style" conferences in the gym on Thursday, November 7th and scheduled conferences in classrooms on Tuesday, November 12th.

As I mentioned in last week's smore, please check your child's progress in advance of conferences so that more time can be spent on goal setting for continued success or improvement.

On a related note, Miss Luberda and Mrs. Monson, our PE teachers who are shared between the Primary and Intermediate Schools, will be at the Primary School on Thursday, November 7th and at the Intermediate School on Tuesday, November 12th if you need to meet with them. Mrs. Gliniecki, our art teacher, will be at the Intermediate School on Thursday, November 7th.

Veterans' Day fundraiser

As Veterans' Day is quickly approaching, I have been contacted by two organizations to show Merton's support for our veterans. One of the organizations, The G.I. Go Fund has a "Jeans for Troops" day that our staff participates in. They pay $5 to wear jeans for the day. The other is a fundraiser for the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight. This organization contacted me about collecting funds for this worthwhile cause. They provided us with a DVD called "Honor Flight: A Visual Journey" which was shown to our 8th graders after the EXPLORE test today. For every $100 we raise, we will also receive the coffee table book Honor Flight: A Visual Journey". If you have any spare change that you can give to your child, we will have a jug in the cafeteria for this collection. If you are a veteran or a current service member, I thank you for your service to our country.

Book Fair November 11th-15th

We will be having a fall book fair this year from November 11th-15th. This is a great opportunity for you to purchase books for your child. The teachers will have a "wish list" of books if you would like to purchase any books for our teachers. All proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase books for our classrooms.

STEMfest at Discovery World

Here is a link to an opportunity for STEMfest to be held at Discovery World on Saturday, November 9th. The event is FREE!

Food drive November 4th-15th

Merton will begin its annual Food Drive on Monday, November 4th and it will end on Friday, November 15th. This is a great example of the many community service activities that our district takes part in every school year. Please check the Mustang Memo for acceptable food items.

Homework Club for the next two weeks

Due to parent teacher conferences on Thursday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 12th, Homework Club will only meet on Tuesday, November 5th and Thursday, November 14th. Thanks to Miss Francoeur, Miss Kohnert, and Miss Depies for their work with our students!
