Counseling Corner: September Edition
College Day
- 9th Grade: All take a practice PSAT
- 10th Grade: All take a practice PSAT
- 11th Grade: All take the PSAT/NMSQT
- 12th Grade: Students select workshops based on interest. Seniors will be able to attend a total of four sessions that encompass subjects such as financial aid, interviews skills, Common App assistance, military options, the community college option and process, UC Insight Question advice, general college application completion assistance, FIDM career exploration, STEM panel, out-of-state colleges options and Naviance assistance. Please encourage your senior to fully participate.
TUSD College Fair
Tustin Unified School District will be hosting a College & Career Fair with representatives from dozens of different colleges and universities who will be available to answer your questions and provide information about their campuses. In addition, there will be workshops on financial aid and NCAA eligibility, as well as the UC, Cal State, and community college systems.

Wellness Corner
In observance of Suicide Prevention Month and Mental Health Awareness Week, we will be hosting the following workshops for our parents and students in September and October:
- Wellness Wednesday Workshop: Sep 26 from 8:15-9:00 am in the Commons. The topic will be “Healthy Coping” and light snacks will be provided. Please remind your student to RSVP for the event, but walk-ins are welcome!
- Parent Wellness Workshop: Sep 26 from 6:15-7:00 pm in the PAC. The topic will be “What is Mental Health.” presented by our mental health therapist. The presentation is geared towards breaking the stigma associated with mental health. What is it? What influences it? How to recognize signs of mental illness and what we can do to cope. Please RSVP for the event, but walk-ins are welcome!
- Mental Health Awareness Week October 1st-4th: We will be hosting a Wellness Fair Oct 4th during student lunch by the clock tower. Please encourage your students to visit the clock tower, enjoy a fun time, and take free swag along with resources on various healthy coping skills.
- Lunch & Learn: Can’t make it to a Wellness Wednesday Workshop? Try a Lunch & Learn during student lunch. College counselors will be delivering on a variety of topics (see attachment below) and lunch will be provided! Please RSVP to save your spot.
Senior Scene
- Counselors are meeting with seniors one-on-one through their Gov/Econ classes between Sep 10th-18th to talk about their grad status, transcripts, and college planning prep.
- ’B’ Prepared for College: in the PAC on Sept 17th at 6:30 pm. Topics will include: resources, college admission, senior timeline, financial aid & more.
- Financial Aid Night: Join us Sept 25th at 6:00 pm in the PAC to learn about the different resources available for college students. The IVC Financial Aid Coordinator will present regardless of which type of college your student plans to attend.
- Cash for College Workshop: Oct 11th at 6:00 pm in rooms 131/132. Join us for this hands-on workshop with financial aid specialists who will help you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and Californial Dream Act application. To get the most out of this workshop, you will need to bring your 2017 tax returns and a laptop.
- Seniors who haven't already submitted their college packets to their counselor must do so by Oct 17th for colleges with due dates after Dec 1st.
Sophomore Stop
- Parents, please plan to attend 'B' Prepared for College Grades 10 & 11 sponsored by Ed Fund on Oct 3rd at 6:30 pm in the PAC.
- Sophomores should set goals for the school year that are attainable and healthy.
- Engage in activities at school; go to games and try to attend a dance. Join clubs during Club Rush as colleges like club participation.
- Make appointments to talk to your counselors about classes, especially if you are struggling, Discuss college & career choices with family and your counselor.
- Make a plan to check your student's Aeries account regularly; know what is assigned and when it is due.
- If your student is interested in taking the actual PSAT, extra copies will be available to purchase beginning 9/20 for $21; however, only juniors taking this test may qualify for NMSQT (National Merit).

- Parents, please plan to attend the Beckman Ed Fund sponsored 9th grade B Prepared for High School Night on Sept 20th at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
