Academic Counseling from Ms. Grijlava
For our 10th and 11th grade students, Ms. Grijlava is meeting with them to complete their AOC Education Plan. Students are completing summer registration for those taking COC summer courses. COC Fall registration will be in May, but the paperwork will be completed in April. Our 11th Grade Parent Meeting will be held in May and the date will be determined.
For our 12th grade students, throughout the month of March, more college decisions will be emailed by colleges. Students need to update Naviance with a decision status. For students staying at COC, we will begin the process of registration this week, March 7th. And, lastly, college decision day is on May 1st.
If you have any questions about this information, please contact us at AOC, dgrijalva@hartdistrict.org

News from our Superintendent Mask Mandate
Citing recent declines in Omicron cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, the Governor’s Office and the California Department of Public Health have announced that the statewide indoor masking requirement will sunset at the conclusion of the school day on March 11, 2022. This means that starting March 12, the State will no longer require indoor masking for either students or staff regardless of vaccination status.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also sent out a message today that stated the following: “LA County Public Health will align school masking measures with the state and shift to strongly recommending indoor masking requirements at childcare sites and K-12 schools beginning March 12”
Officials were careful to emphasize that this change may be revisited - and some protections may be reinstituted - if we confront another surge or encounter a worrisome new variant. Nevertheless, we welcome today’s news as it comes as a confirmation that State officials believe we have reached a point where it is safe for students and staff to remove their masks on March 12.
Since the start of the pandemic, the Hart District has implemented all State and County masking requirements. The Hart District will make masking optional starting on March 12.
SCV Project Linus "Make a Blanket Drive" on 3/19 from 10am-2pm
Dear AOC Students,
SCV Project Linus is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to provide comfort for critically ill and traumatized children (ages 0-18) through the distribution of handmade blankets. Every half year we host Make a Blanket Day, an event where people from the community come together to make blankets with the help of our staff. We are asking for your help in publicizing our event so we can reach our large goal of covering all of our children for the spring and summer season. No previous blanket-making experience is required! Service hours are also guaranteed for all those who choose to participate.
This year, Project Linus is offering a drop-off option where participants can make their blankets at home and drop them off on Saturday, March 19th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Academy of the Canyons/the COC UCEN (Valencia Campus). Anyone who volunteers at Make a Blanket Drop Off will contribute to their community by providing more handmade blankets to distribute to needy children of SCV and beyond. The attachments below include a video and a flier that summarize Make a Blanket Drop off. We would appreciate it if you could showcase the video in your Google Classroom as we are looking to cover our beneficiaries for the upcoming spring and summer months.
