Come to the New England Colonies!

You Know you want to!

Geography

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are part of the New England Colonies. All four of these colonies are surrounded by water, which is good for fishing and trade.

Life In the New England Colonies

Food and Chores

In the New England colonies families grow a variety of plants like: corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins. The animals they raise are: chickens, sheep, cows, and pigs. On the farm the men do the hunting and planting. The women make clothes, candles, soap, corn meal, preserved vegetables and meat, and do the cooking.

Land

The total area of this region is 71,991.8 sq mi (186,458.8 km). There was very little level land. It is primarily covered by deep and rich forests that include rich soil used for farming, and wood used for building houses and fences to put around your property/house. There is plenty of wildlife ideal for hunting. This area is also located near the ocean which is another great source for food.

Political System

If you want something, come here and speak up your mind. Just come down to the town meetings were we discuss things and vote on issues such as what roads should be built, how much should the schoolmaster be paid, etc. This early experience encourages the growth of democratic ideas in the new England colonies.

Religion

We only have this simple requirement. Come to church every Sunday. Women sit at one side of the church and men on the other. The Blacks and Indians stand in a balcony at the back and the children have separate pews, where an adult watches over them. We promise that your children will grow up to be better kids. Later on, they will learn how coming to church can make them and their future become more stable and healthy.

Jobs

New England is not a good place for farming. The farmers only farm enough for themselves, so the people in New England have to find other ways to make money. The main ways to make money is to build ships, whaling (catch whales for their oils, etc.), fish, or blacksmith.

Slavery

Since there are not a lot good farming areas, slaves are not needed as much as the other colonies because there is no labor for them to do. They are expensive to feed because of the lack of farmland. Most of the slavery is done in large cities.
