The Trojan Scoop
October 2023
Here is a sneak peak of what we have in store this October
A message from Dr. Gonzalez
Greetings Catalina Community.
It is the end of the first quarter! I can’t believe it. We have had an amazing first quarter. In our classrooms students and teachers are continuing to build community and strong relationships. Instructionally teachers and students are engaging in the learning process.
We had a great time at the Homecoming game and dance. Congratulations to all the royalty for Homecoming. Our Fall sports have been having much success. Remember to come out and support our fall sports!
We have taken inventory of our one-to-one device initiative and all students should now have a device. The expectation is that students bring charged devices to school and to all their classes every day. Computers are a learning device and students must have them daily to complete assignments in class.
Reminders to please make it to school on time every day. We will be making phone calls home to students with excessive tardies to determine how we can work together to mitigate tardies. Also, a reminder that if a student had more than 12 unexcused absences in a class and they have a passing grade the grade will have to be appealed. This is a TUSD board policy, and we will be enforcing it as we believe in the importance of being in class to succeed.
This week is a short week for students, no school on Friday, October 6th for students. For teachers this is grading day so by October 9th you will have access to first quarter grades. Students in credit recovery continue to work through Fall Break on you Apex courses.
Please take note of all the events we have scheduled to kickoff second quarter. I wish you all an amazing and a relaxing Fall Break the week of October 9 - October 13. See you back on October 16th for the start of an awesome second quarter. Have fun and be safe.
October 2023: News from the Library Media Center
September was ‘sign up for a public library card’ month! Pima County library came out to present information to all our ELA classes and hand out public library cards to the many students who wanted them! More information about this here! or on our Catalina library website!
All the Social Studies classes got trained on how to use the Free State Library Databases for research and how to cite their sources with a great citation tool: Mybib. Way to go to the Social Studies department! These databases are free to any Arizona resident; try them out!
Banned Books week is the first week in October when we celebrate the freedom to read. Check out our website for more information on banned and challenged books.
Have you seen the show or the movie? Why not read the book? We have a student-created display called Page to Screen highlighting all the books we have that have been or will be turned into a show or movie!
Getting ready for October:
Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th to October 15th and the library has over a hundred books on display around the library that are by or about Hispanic or Latinos.
READ if you DARE??!! October is all about horror and thriller books! Students can check out spine-tingling suspense and nail-biting thriller books this month. See our Collections to find a good read!
