The Trailside Twister
November 2018
Principal's Corner
Hello Trailside Families,
As always, October was an exciting month at Trailside as we had conferences, the book fair, Halloween, fire safety, and this year our beloved Brewers added even more excitement! We would like to give a special thank you to the Trailside PTO and parents for once again providing an amazing dinner for our staff during conferences. I wish you all could see the appreciation on the faces of our teachers as they treat themselves to a warm delicious dinner.
We had a successful ALiCE drill and implentation of the Raptor guest check-in system. In addition to the Raptor system, the front office entrance will be getting a makeover to provide more security for the building. This change will occur sometime this school year.
Please remember our family resource room is always available if you are ever in need of resources from information on ways you can help support your child, books, and a variety of board games you can check out and play with your family. Information on community resources is also available.
Thank you to all our 6th graders for taking part in our Trailside Super Sixers program. Every 6th grader signed up for an opportunity to be a leader in the building and help Trailside in some way. Recess helpers, gym aides, red wing assistants, and building helpers are just some of the opportunities our Super Sixers are taking part in. What a powerful way for our students to demonstrate what it means to be a positive role model for our younger students.
Thank you for your continued support of Trailside!

When Should I Keep My Child Home?
Dear Parents:
Children learn best when they are healthy, but they also learn best when they are in school. So, when your school age child complains of not feeling well on a school day, a decision must be made as to whether the child should stay home or go to school.
It is important to make the right decision because one sick child in a school setting can result in spreading the illness to others. However, if a child is having difficulties in school, he or she may claim to be ill when they are not, making success in school a challenge due to excessive absences.
If your child is experiencing any of the following illnesses* or symptoms of illness, please keep your child home from school and contact your child’s physician:
Oral temperature 100 or greater
Nausea with vomiting
Uncontrolled coughing
Lethargy or headache with fever
Impetigo
Pink eye
Strep throat/infection
Pertussis (whooping cough)
Chicken pox
*This is not a complete listing of communicable diseases that would require exclusion from school. Please contact your Doctor or Health Department for a complete list.
Please consider sending your child to school if they have these complaints in the absence of fever or vomiting, as many of these resolve on their own during the school day:
nausea
headache
exhaustion/complaints of being “tired”
Skipping breakfast is the most common cause of these complaints; encouraging your child to eat a healthy breakfast can not only prevent these symptoms, but increase school performance and establish a lifetime healthy eating habits.
If your child has a long-term illness that requires extended absences from school, please contact the main office as soon as possible so arrangements can be made for make up work.
If your child develops a pattern of absences due to illness, a meeting will be arranged with you, the School Nurse, Dean of Students, and your child to create a plan to prevent your student from falling behind in their schoolwork.
If you are unsure if it is appropriate to send your child to school, please contact your physician or local health department at (262) 763-4930.
Thank you, and have a healthy and productive school year:

Red Wing Twisters
On October 17th, Mrs. Amerling's Kindergarten class visited Swan's Pumpkin Farm! They had lots of fun taking a hay ride, finding their way through the corn maze, viewing a puppet show, and picking out their own pumpkin to take home!
Mrs. Fischer's first graders were proud to present on the environments they were learning about for their Project Lead the Way unit.
Mrs. Boucher's first grade students worked hard creating their final shoe design for their Project Lead The Way: Animal Adaptations unit.
In these three pictures, the second graders had fun visiting Borzynski's Farm to enjoy fall activities and learn how to treat others with respect with a special read aloud of "Spookly the Square Pumpkin."
