Terra Linda Tiger Tale
October 29, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
Thank you for the support and care you are giving your child(ren) during on-line learning. I am aware of the challenges that this presents for families and students. While this is not what we would hope for, I appreciate how all are making the best of the situation. Teachers are working tremendously hard, students are engaging and trying to the best of their ability, and families are giving so much. It is a remarkable time in so many ways!
One of the many aspects of my work that I love is being in classrooms and watching children at work. The focus of our work with children is to engage them in thoughtful, rigorous work, hold them to high expectations, and provide just enough support so that they can complete tasks independently. There is a sweet spot between offering too much and not enough help or support. As teachers, we have come to learn that when we step in to support at the first sign of struggle for a child, rather than giving them time and space to work through the challenge independently, we tend to limit their learning. In order for students to truly become independent learners, they need to believe in themselves and their ability to persist through the challenges they encounter.
We certainly do not want children to get to the point where they feel frustrated and give up, but we do want them to experience success by working through tasks on their own or with a peer. When students make meaning on their own, ask questions for understanding and see that their hard work resulted in success, then they not only feel better about themselves, their learning is far more durable. If the work is too easy or we support them too much, they may get the “right answer,” but their sense of self and the quality of the learning is not as strong.
This is part of our ongoing work, whether in person or on-line. As a school we continue to explore how to do this depth of work well. We invite you into this learning with us. If you see your child struggling, here are somethings you can do to help:,
Ask leading questions to guide their thinking
Instead of asking what they don’t understand, ask them what they do understand about the task
Have them step away from the task and come back to it to give their subconscious time to wrestle with the work
Encourage your child to see mistakes as opportunities to learn
Praise them for their persistence
I am so proud of teachers and students and all they have accomplished this fall. We have all been engaged in our own “productive struggle”. As always, do not hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns, or tips for how we can help you support your child at home.
With appreciation,
Christy

The Tooth Taxi will be at Terra Linda, November 9-13 for Free Dental Care - Call Today for an Appointment! 503-329-8877
The Dental Foundation of Oregon’s mobile dental van the Tooth Taxi is coming! They will be parked at Terra Linda Elementary School, November 9th-13th to treat our families. Not operating on Wednesday, November 11 for Veteran's Day.
- The Tooth Taxi is staffed by dental professionals and offers a range of dental services including exams, cleanings, sealants, fillings and simple extractions for FREE.
Treatment priority will be given to those who have no dental insurance, are experiencing pain, have never been seen by a dentist, have OHP but are not being seen regularly by a dentist and those who may not be able to afford their copay, but all are welcome.
- The health and safety of our patients and staff is always our highest priority. Our Mobile Program is following the most recent infection control recommendations made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and The Oregon Health Authority (OHA). We’re closely following the activities of these agencies to stay current with any new protocols and best practice guidance that may be issued.
- Registration in advance is needed, and a patient consent and information form must be completed. Contact Carrie Peterson at 503-329-8877 to make an appointment.
Daylight Savings Ends November 1: Important Tips for Traveling Safely
On Sunday, November 1, we fall back an hour which means it will be darker earlier. With shorter days this time of year, all road users should be extra alert to see each other.
Here are some suggestions to help everyone stay safe on the road:
- Wear bright reflective clothing when walking or rolling.
- Don’t assume people driving will see you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
- Be alert! Keep eyes and ears open, especially while crossing the street.
- Cyclists should make sure to have lights and wear helmets – it is the law, and it helps people see you and keep you safe.
- Driving or biking? Use extra caution and slow down in the dark and rain. Always be alert for people on foot or bike at intersections, crosswalks (marked and unmarked), bike lanes and in school zones. Do not text and drive – it’s against the law, carries steep fines and is unsafe for all road users.

TAG Nomination Process (Repeat) - Forms Due Friday, November 13
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.
If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.
Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to our office at Terra Linda by Friday, November 13. You can drop it off during any of our Grab & Go events, you can send it by mail, or you can send it as an attachment in an email to elizabeth_sarles@beaverton.k12.or.us
