Open Announcements

June 13, 2021

Dear Open High Family,

It was so wonderful to celebrate the Class of 2021 on Friday evening! Having the building full of students and teachers again was simply joyous. If you weren't able to attend, graduation tickets are available at the school this week, and don't forget to bring your computers, calculators, and textbooks. We can't wait to see our graduates and their families next Monday, June 21 at the Diamond! Please review the graduation details so you're ready to walk across the stage and get that diploma.

Thanks to rising senior Heaven Cannady for her presentation of the RPS Valedictorians and Salutatorians including our own Abena Williams and Esme' Munson. If you missed RPS Live! this week, the 2021 Valedictorians also shared their experience and wisdom which you can watch here. Along with rising sophomore Dublas Aviles, Abena also presented her capstone project from the REAL Richmond class. You can view the full presentation here. And our Scholastic Standout Greta Gotschalk was also honored this week. Let's celebrate all these remarkable students and the entire Class of 2021. We love you, we are proud of you, and we wish you the very best!

We also want to shout out our rising senior, Thor Wallin, for his short video and ode to film noir, King of Diamonds which premiered at our final Town Meeting on Friday. Our second annual Short Film Contest will take place next year, so budding filmmakers can start making plans now! Speaking of rising seniors, please see the flyer below and the opportunity to get a head start on college applications with PECS Virtual College Essay Boot Camp this summer.

AP Exam Scores for Administration 2 will be available to students on July 21 and Administration 3 on August 16. If you have questions about Makeup Exams, please reach out to Micah at

Remember that at Open, we aim to continuously improve how we serve students. If you haven't already done so, please provide us feedback by taking the Family Engagement Survey or Student Satisfaction Survey.

We also have some bittersweet news. Chemistry and AP Computer Science teacher Cesar Sertzen will not be with us next year. Instead, he is happily returning to his jewelry business. I want to personally thank Cesar for spending this virtual year with us. We have enjoyed having you here, and you will be greatly missed!

Finally, our Last Day of School & Farewell Drop By Event is on Thursday, June 17, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM @ Open. There will be no class on this day. At 11:00 AM, the PTSA will provide some sweet treats to celebrate our students and all their hard work this year. Teachers will be also be at Open for your summer send off. Please return all your laptops, hotspots, chargers, calculators, and textbooks at this time. If you are attending Summer School (see below) or taking a Makeup AP exam, please keep your Chromebook and return when you have finished.

Keep an eye on your snail mail for Report Cards which will be distributed the week of June 21. And during the summer, please be alert for updates on our fall ReOPENing Plans. If you have any questions, never hesitate to contact me at or at 804.229.9961. As always, be well, stay safe, and keep celebrating Open minds!

NEW! ReOPENing Fall 2021

The 2021-2022 Calendar is available here.

If you couldn't make it to our ReOPENing Town Hall on Wednesday, May 26, enjoy the recorded version here. We will continue to update the community throughout the summer as plans solidify and guidance changes.

Effective July 1, rising seniors will be required to have the Meningococcal Conjugate (MENACWY). See flyer below.

We will return to our popular Thursday Elective program and want to hear from you! Please complete this survey so we know what you are interested in and we can plan accordingly.

As most of you know, we don't have a cafeteria, but we are lucky to be close to downtown where there are lots of lunch options. RPS also provides free, grab-and-go breakfast and lunch for everybody. In addition, we are exploring the possibility of partnering with Yay Lunch! which is a food delivery service. See the attached flyer for more info and complete this interest survey so we know if we should pursue this option for our students.

Read about Health and Safety protocols for next year. Open will also have a full time nurse and clinic for the very first time!

Please read Superintendent Kamras' Family Letter and Checklist. RPS is also hosting Community Conversations to ensure families are prepared, informed, and excited to #ReopenWithLove2.0! For all the latest information from the district, subscribe to RPSDirect.
