Coffee with the Principal Updates
- Question: Are we pursuing NC HS Athletic Association? Answer: The goal is still to seek admission to the NCHSAA. We are looking at the factors that will effect entrance. Facilities and having enough students to field men and women teams are the biggest factors.
- Question: NCLA and teachers in state retirement. Answer: We are officially IN! Thank you to those families for helping us financially through the capital campaign SOAR. This helped to make this a reality for our teachers.
- Question: Paying to receive final report card? - We cheerfully GIVE.ALL.YEAR.LONG - asking for $1 for a cost of business expense seems petty and makes me not want to give any more. Please reconsider. Answer: This is a standard practice in local schools. Last year we tried to have parents pick up report cards and it was a nightmare for us. I am sorry that folks feel they do not want to put 2 stamps on the report card envelopes or send in $1 but it would cost us $651.20 to mail all of the reports cards and we feel it is a minimal cost of 2 stamps for each student.
- Question: What is being done about social media and students and explicit photographs? Answer: We are not aware of students and explicit photographs with social media. When we have been made aware of any student involvement with social media and inappropriate conduct we have addressed it from a disciplinary standpoint.
- Presentation about Math for rising 7th and 8th graders. There is a new rule coming from DPI eliminating double testing for 8th grade students. This becomes important because for those students taking Math 1 in 8th grade will need to test in high school using a NC EOC test in Math 3 by the end of 10th grade. This is important because it would mean that students taking Math 1 in 8th grade would not be able to retake Math 1 in 9th grade if they wanted to because in a traditional schedule, they would not have time to reach Math 3 by the end of 10th grade. There is also an amount of data from the state that suggests the information students miss in skipping 7th grade math is causing them problems in Math 3. Therefore, we are going to need to be very intentional about students that take Math I in middle school as it could effect them later in their high school career. Decisions about students taking Math 1 in 7th or 8th grades will be based on teacher recommendations, maturity, MAP scores, previous and current EOG scores in both math and reading and other formative data.

SCRIP - Help School
Email scrip@thencla.org TODAY to get started.
What is SCRIP?
SCRIPT is a way to help the school by doing something you do already!
Signing up to SCRIP, you will order gift cards to stores or for gifts that you already use or will buy. For example, if you buy a $10 gift card to Starbucks. You will pay $10 for it but the school(PTO) will receive a $1 as well. Costing you no more than the face value.
Some stores have higher rebates than others. There are hundreds of vendors to choose from. Some of the gift cards and be downloaded immediately and printed off.
Click HERE for link to PTO and information about SCRIPT.Money Matters Competition
The "Money Makers" whose members are Ashley Sodt, Jonte Johnson, Sadie Ross, Hannah Ross, and Natalie Peters, celebrated a 10th place win out of 134 competitors in the national Stock Market Game competition. The teams were given $100,000 to invest in companies that are publicly traded on the stock market. They worked hard for two months learning about stocks, trading, and assessing companies for value and potential investment.
Congratulations for your success in our first year of competing! - Ms. Blaya
