Famous Hoosiers
The Famous Hoosiers have been assigned and the kids are super excited to start on this monumental 4th grade project! A timeline will be coming home with information you need to have. Please keep this in a place where you can refer to it from now until May. Here is what the kids need to know for now:
You will need to begin your research at home. You will need at least two sources to get started, but feel free to locate more than that. Please staple each source if it is more than one page long. Write your name on each. Please read your sources at home with a parent before bringing them to school. Ask Mom or Dad to sign the top of each source after they read it with you. (Parents, this is an important step!) Do not highlight your sources. We will do that together at school. I will check your articles at school for signatures, and we will highlight them and take notes together. Begin looking for at least two sources at home now!
Examples of sources include:
Books or excerpts of books
Articles from reliable websites
Articles from periodicals (magazines, newspapers, etc.)
Encyclopedia entries (online or actual encyclopedias)
Interviews or emails
Primary sources
If you Famous Hoosier is an author, you can read his or her books
If your Famous Hoosier is an artist, observe his or her artwork
If your Famous Hoosier is a government figure, read one of his or her speeches
If your Famous Hoosier kept a journal, read his or her journal entries
If you make copies of a source (ex. encyclopedias that cannot be checked out), make sure you gather the citation information: title, article title, author, copyright date, city where published, volume number, etc. You can copy the title page; we can get what we need from there.
**This is the beginning of your research. We will gather more sources as needed once we begin to organize the information you have to start with.
Kokomo Beach Day Announcement
Thursday, March 30th is Kokomo Beach Day at Union! In celebration of Spring Break, the entire school will dress as if traveling to warmer weather. For example, wear shorts, bright colored clothes, flower printed clothes, short sleeve t-shirts, flowered print dresses, sandals, etc! Please make sure to dress appropriate (no swim suits) and wears coats, sweat pants, sweatshirts, and tennis shoes over these “spring” like clothes as your child travels to school and heads out to recess. Also, your child may bring his or her BEACH TOWEL to sit on during lunch!
We hope you have a safe and happy Spring Break,
Bus Driver Day!
We are so thankful for the daily dedication, patience, and safety our school bus drivers provide for our students. We will be thanking each one of our drivers and assistants on Friday, March 24. If your child benefits from these wonderful individuals, please have your child write a note or make a picture and deliver it to their bus driver during the week of March 20-24. Thank you for your help showing them how much they are appreciated!
Relay for Life Union Style
Our Relay for Life week of activities will be held during the week of March 20th. Each day we will be collecting specific coins and having a spirit day to celebrate a healthy lifestyle. On Friday, we will have a movie night right after school. The cost is $12 which will go towards our Relay for Life pledges for Union. We are still accepting kiddos to attend! Many of the teachers will be there which makes it super fun for the kids!

ZMS Music
This week, the ZMS music teachers will be visiting us. They have looked at your child's music selection for next year and the students will be grouped accordingly. Within each group, the students will be trying out the different instruments or learning a few skills in choir. ZMS...here we come!
Guest Speakers
We are so excited to have guest speakers from the Harrison House join next week week! They have an amazing activity where the students will learn how towns were first developed. We will also have another guest speaker sharing electrical safety and how power travels through our town. This is a beautiful tie in with our standards focusing on circuits and electricity.
