Order and Chaos

What do you find at the intersection of Order and Chaos? Why an ASPIRE classroom - of course! This year we have chosen to integrate a universal theme throughout our curriculum. Our scholars did a great job writing generalizations about this theme. "Too much order can lead to chaos." "Order AND chaos are just a part of life." "Order leads to chaos and chaos can also lead to order." "Out of chaos comes creativity."

ASPIRE Curriculum Night

Please plan to attend Curriculum Night next Thursday, September 10. If you are new to the ASPIRE Academy, please join us at 6:00 in the cafeteria. We will then meet with ALL parents from 6:30-7:15 in the library.

We ask that you plan to leave your children at home if at all possible. If you can't come without bringing your child, please bring a quiet activity for them to do. Thank you for your cooperation in this.

Reading Rewards and the 40 Book Challenge

The 5th graders at Glenhope are all participating in a 40 Book Challenge this year. The challenge is to not only read 40 books between June and May, but to vary their reading habits by reading books of various genres. One of the ways the students may keep track of the books they read is to use We have decided to keep the combined 5th grade ASPIRE group that we started this summer. Reading Rewards is a great sight for the students to not only track their reading, but to also recommend books to their peers. If your child did not join the group this summer, please have them join now (OAKR7H).

Planner? What Planner?

At Glenhope it was decided that since our students are being allowed to take their iPads home each night that we would not have the students also purchase a planner. After much searching and discussion, Mr. Boykin and Mrs. Fullhart have chosen a combination of apps for the students to use for planning, organizing, and developing habits of learning. The first is Quick HW - this app is a digital planner. The scholars may use it to record the I can statement for the class period and a brief phrase about what they did to show their learning and/or homework for that class. We have also added a Reminder section to this app where the scholars can type reminders for the day or have them carry over in the week. We will also be utilizing the calendar app for checkpoints and major due dates of projects. Finally we will be utilizing Google Classroom, Google Drive and Google Sites as digital "turn-in" boxes and portfolios.

Grit and Goal Setting

This week we have started talking about grit - having persistence and resilience - and how it can lead to success. In the ASPIRE Academy we feel that there is a strong need to discuss grit, motivation, and growth as the students begin to set goals for the year. Here's a great video that we used with our scholars as part of our discussion. In the next few weeks we will begin the process of writing SMART Goals.

A Peek at Our Week

Our Scholars have been working on a couple of projects this week. They had the opportunity to collaborate on a presentation of choice to share information about Climate Change. These were presented on Thursday and Friday. They have also worked on an individual project that combines math, social studies and exploring significant memories and aspirations - Mapping My 1st Quarter Century. Scholars will begin these presentations next week in their homeroom class.

Thursday was a mini field trip - a Scavenger Hunt around Glenhope looking for examples of map skills vocabulary. Had fun finding the GPS coordinates of each find.
