What’s Happening in the Library?
2nd-grade highlight...
Starting last week, second graders constructed instruments from a set of materials Ms. Maneck gave them. First, we read Trombone Shorty about the life of musician Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. Then we revisited how sound is made and followed the design process to create some pretty amazing sound makers.
Check out the attached 6-second video of Elizabeth Vietzen's class creating an orchestra!

Reading to and With Your Child at Home
Many families are modeling reading books to children at home or listening to children as they read. Even for our older students here at Holmes, some families are reading chapter books or novels together and discussing the story as it unfolds. Any way you do it, reading together is quality time together and helping children develop further as readers at the same time!
Interested in some suggestions for things to discuss with your child while reading together? Click the link below to read more! The ways of thinking described will help your child as a reader, too.
Celebrate Holmes Staff
Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!
A FEW NOTES FROM YOUR PTO…
International Taste of Holmes is the hottest ticket in town!
- The International Taste of Holmes is a family social event and our annual celebration of the many cultures represented at Holmes School. Families will taste food, experience cultural tradition, and see and hear from local artisans; African and Irish Dance, Hula, and Taiko (Japanese) Drumming will all be featured. ITOH will take place on Saturday, March 10th from 4:30-7:00 pm! Please click here to sign up and HELP! You can bring a dish or volunteer the day before or day of the event. Help pitch in to make this important event fun and engaging for all our kids! Please!!! Flyers come home next week!
- At our next PTO Community Meeting, taking place on March 14th at 6:30p, Dr. Zelaya and the Holmes F.A.C.E. (Family and Community Engagement) Team will take you through a Community Engagement Exercise to get your input about the type of school that we collectively want Holmes to be. As our school changes and grows, we want your input on how to make it the best it can be!
- Come to this amazing event and go beyond “Hidden Figures” on March 10th, 1-4:30p at Brooks Middle School. Organized by the trifecta of Lincoln, Mann, and Brooks PTO Diversity committees. This DivCo event will include a free screening of the movie followed by a discussion of the film for parents on practicing equity. The discussion will be presented and facilitated by noted social justice scholar and journalist ShaRhonda Knott-Dawson.
There will also be an interactive workshop for kids led by local women of color who work in the fields of tech, science, and medicine.

- Did you miss Hatch School’s recent Diversity Committee event about Mental Health and Technology? Well, don’t fret — Dr. Morrison graciously provided a link to a voice-over version of his presentation, which you can access by clicking here
Trex will happily donate a high-performance composite bench to the winning school, and bestow honorary awards to every school that participates. Our plastic film recycling bins will be located near the office.
