October 22nd and 23rd- Fall Break - no school

Friday, October 30th- Pumpkin Exploration

This week:

In language arts we have been focusing on strategies to figure out "tricky words" I have asked students to start applying these strategies as they do their read to self activity, also as they practice reading at home. I have included a picture above of the decoding skills we have been working on. The sight words for next week are: do, get & was

This week in math our focus has been on the teen numbers. We have learned a catchy song that reminds us that a teen number is a a group of ten and ______extra ones. We learned to make teen numbers in multiple ways; in tens frames, with unifix cubes and other manipulatives. Next week we will wrap up our teen number exploration and review 2d and 3d shapes.

Sound Cabinet: C (the s sound like circus) - students may bring in a small item from home to share that starts with this letter.

In writing we learned how our pictures and our words can make the setting a character clear for our readers. We worked on developing a piece of writing that we really focused on one of those. We always wrap up our writing time with student share time. We notice good things we see in each others writing and wonder about ways to continue to improve. It is so exciting for me to watch these blooming writers!

Spiders are so interesting! We began the week by sharing what we already know about them and expressing what we wonder about them. We did some research with non-fiction text and ended the week by recording what we have learned.

It has been a great week, thank you for sharing your children with me!

What to ask?

Have a kiddo that is reluctant to talk about what they did at school all day? Here are a couple questions to get the conversation rolling.

* What can you tell me about spiders?

* Tell me all about teen numbers?

* Did you read a book about a duck or Rabbit this week, did you do somethings connected to the book?

A little help please

We are looking forward to participating in an Pumpkin Exploration on October 30th. We are in need of a couple pumpkins of varying size to complete this exploration. If your a willing to donate one please let me know.

Also a permission slip will be sent home on Friday for kiddos to use and possibly eat a couple of candy corn. For your child to participate I must have the permission slip signed and returned.

In my email I included a link to the website I am using to organize volunteers this year. If you are someone that would like to help out but is not able to get into the classroom please let me know, there are other ways to help. We are looking forward to having you be apart of our learning community.

Thank you for your continued support!
