WE ARE CELEBRATING EPISCOPAL SCHOOLS WEEK
Episcopal Schools Week is a time to celebrate our 256 students and 51 faculty members that make up our beloved St. Luke’s Episcopal School. One of the attributes that makes Episcopal schools special is being a part of a bigger body. Not only does St. Luke’s Episcopal Church support and pray for us, but we are also a part of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, which is home to 28 Episcopal schools, and the National Association of Episcopal Schools, made up of 1,200 Episcopal schools. Let us proclaim to the community the good news that is St. Luke’s Episcopal School!
St. Luke’s Episcopal School has been shining bright for 75 years. Naturally, our theme for this week is Let Your Light Shine; Be a Blessing to Others. When you aren't afraid to let your light shine bright you are glorifying God and blessing the world.
We will kick off our celebration of Episcopal Schools Week on October 2nd with Episcopal Schools Sunday service at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Several St. Luke’s School students will be asked to serve as acolytes, readers or sing in the choir during the worship service. Dr. Collins will give the sermon. Please join us as we celebrate our amazing school!

FISHING FOR FRIENDS!
Dear Parents,
This month we have been focusing on establishing and keeping friends. Students have had the opportunity to meet "Kid President," and they watched one of his videos that focused on friendships:
(Kid President's 20 Things We Should Say More Often). We also read books, including Nancy Carlson's How to Lose All Your Friends, Big Al by Andrew Clements Yoshi, and The Rat and the Tiger by Keiko Kasza. Mrs. Guglielmo's class went "fishing for friends" as they caught fish with positive characteristics of a friend written on them! Some classes watched slideshows that included descriptors of qualities of a good friend to form caring, compassion, and positivity. The slides also had qualities we should try not to have, such as whining, tattling, and grumpiness. Students who created a product during these lessons will have their work hanging in the hallway by the parish hall. The seventh and eighth grade students will continue talking about friendships and how to avoid being a frenemy with others.
I have enjoyed teaching the students lessons and will begin small social skills groups soon. More information will be forthcoming!
Sincerely yours,
Donna Finch,
Guidance Counselor
DRUMROLL PLEASE...
Here are our most recent Students of the Week! These students receive a shout-out at the end of our Friday chapel for exemplifying The St. Luke's Way to a friend, a student, or a staff member. The students below were celebrated for being team players, helping a friend on crutches, having great attitudes, and having kind hearts. Students, we see you, and we appreciate you! Thank you for SHINING BRIGHT!

MEET LAURIE GROCE, KINDERGARTEN TEACHING ASSISTANT
Tell us about your family. My immediate and my husband's family are very close, loving, and spiritual. We have celebrated many beautiful holidays and travels, which will always be dear to my heart. I am truly blessed to say that my husband, the love of my life, is my best friend.
What university did you attend? I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of the Incarnate Word with a degree in English and a Minor in Psychology. I have worked in Education for twelve years and I heartfully believe this is my calling in life.
What is your favorite hobby? I love to cook, especially for others. Seeing my loved ones take pleasure in my culinary efforts brings me great joy. Attempting exotic recipes is great fun and I enjoy trying them out with my family and friends!
What is your favorite book? The Bible is my favorite book, as it brings me peace, inspiration, and a sense of serenity. I also thoroughly delight in reading cookbooks and finding new recipes!
What do you love about working at SLES? The minute I walk into this beautiful school, I feel such a sense of camaraderie and happiness. The teachers are very supportive of each other, all about working towards a common goal of providing our students the best education and well-being. I love that SLES carries the same spiritual ideals I was raised with.
Do you have any pets? I am the proud mommy of a mischievous, small spotted Bull Terrier named Peanut. It always brings a smile to my face to see a tail-wagging, excited furry friend when I walk in the door at the end of the day!
What would you share if you could pass on any wisdom to our students? I convey to students that being kind and thoughtful of each other's feelings is important, keeping in mind that we are all children of God. Also, if you try your best, there are no limits to what you can accomplish in life.
How does daily chapel affect our students? Chapel is a beautiful way to set the tone for the day, feeling the presence of God and being comforted in the knowledge that He is always with you. It is heartwarming to begin the day celebrating and honoring His glory.
