PLEASE READ: FINAL EXAM INFORMATION
On Tuesday of next week, we kick off our Winter District and school testing schedule. I wanted to provide you with one place to look for information regarding the week. This is a long email full of critical information. I have linked a podcast that walks you through the testing bell schedule, cart check out and material pick up, if you would prefer to listen to the information. The Podcast is ‘pinned’ to the top of the Assessments SharePoint folder. The hyperlink above will take you directly there. The podcast contains the same information as this email, simply in a different format.
You can also access this information in the Howler Hub and SharePoint. Nearly every student on our campus will be testing at some point in their day each day. To accommodate the required 90-minute timeframe for HS District Finals, we will be on a modified schedule Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday December 19-21st. Tuesday’s testing periods will be 1st and 4th. To prevent a split period during 4th, the order of the day will be revised to 1st (testing), 2nd, 3rd, 5th (A, B, C lunch by grade level as usual), 4th (testing), 6th. Fourth period and 5th period simply switch places on Tuesday ONLY. We will resume a normal bell schedule on December 22nd which is a day that students can make-up missed exams and preview next semester’s learning (see Howler Hub for ideas). I will be placing min versions of each day’s schedule in the mailroom and media copy room on Friday. They fit in your id badge on your lanyard for easy access.
Quarterly Checks (ELA, HS Math, Science and Social Studies)
Most core classes are taking Quarterly Checks during the testing periods each day. We will follow the same procedure as Q1 Quarterly Checks. MS ELA, HS ELA 3 and HS Math will require computers. Please refer to the latest Computer-based testing schedule (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) for the location or cart you will be testing in. We are using nearly all the computers available on campus, so it is possible you will be relocating to a room with computers, rather than picking up a cart, at least one of the periods you are testing. Review the schedule carefully. I will also have it posted in the media by Cart check out to help. I made a note on the schedule if you needed to return the cart at the end of the day. If not noted, you have that same cart for the next day’s testing. There are a few carts that will be moving between periods. Pack Leaders will pick up and deliver your Cart if it needs to be moved for the 2nd test of the day. Here is a copy of the Quarterly Check Quick Start guide, in case you want to review the procedure for logging in. Paper-based Quarterly Check--Honors/Advanced and Basic level courses are now using the same test, so you will receive one class set rather than two if you teach both levels. For Paper-based Quarterly Checks, you can check your materials out in room 4-127 on Monday between 7:05-7:25am, during your planning period or lunch rather than the morning of testing. Since grades 6-11 are testing at the same time, picking up materials early should make it a smooth, quick process.
District Finals (PE, MS Art 2D, MS Explor. Spanish, PSCD, Law Studies, Psychology, CPTR APPL BUS)
District finals in identified semester courses count for 10% of a student’s semester grade. The District FAQ on District Finals is attached for general information regarding grades, format, etc. If you are giving a Computer-based District Finals (Explor. Spanish , MS Art 2D, PSCD 3), please review the latest Computer-based testing schedule (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) for the location or cart you will be using for testing. You can also find this information on SharePoint and in the Howler Hub. We are using nearly all the computers available on campus, so it is possible you will be relocating to a room with computers, rather than picking up a cart, at least one of the periods you are testing. There are a few carts that will be moving between periods. Pack Leaders will pick up and deliver your Cart if it needs to be moved for the 2nd test of the day. For Paper-based District Finals (PE, PSCD 1 & 3, Law Studies, Psychology and CPTR APPL BUS), you be checking your materials out from 4-127 each morning that you have an assessment and returning materials each afternoon. This is a District requirement. I have to scan answer sheets on the day the test is taken.
Regardless of the type of assessment that will be occurring in your room, nearly all of our students will be impacted. This is the first time many of our 6th grade students have an assessment that counts for 10% of their grade, if they have a District Final in a semester long class. For our 9th grade students, it is the first time that they are experiencing final exams with GPA implications (in Semester long classes). Let’s set a positive, supportive tone for them as they learn how we ‘HOWL’ at assessments as a Coyote community.
Please let me know if you have any questions! This is our first school wide testing schedule and it has a lot of moving parts. Feel free to stop by my room, call me 64558 or 813-909-6977 or email.
Ideas for Friday December 22nd
Friday December 22nd is an excellent day to remind students of the journey they have been on in your classroom this semester and make connections to where they are headed in Semester 2.
Provide students with a list of major topics from 1st semester (or ask them to generate the list). In small teams, have students make a representation (concept map, diagram/image, skit, rap, etc.) that shows how these topics are connected. Once they have represented Semester 1, provide them with some of the big topics coming in Semester 2 and see where they may place or connect these new ideas. This provides a ‘big picture’ review of their learning so far while previewing where they are headed and how it connects. I used this in my Biology classes and called it ‘The story so far…”. It was always amazing to see how creatively students could show the journey we had been on so far. Displaying and revisiting the teams work in January is a great way to start Semester 2.
Another idea is to use the HOWL expectations to have the students reflect on their own learning in your class over Semester 1. Ask them to review their notebook/work to find evidence of the HOWL expectations in the work you engaged in as a class. A quick graphic organizer can help them to think about how the HOWL expectations live in their way of work while allowing them to review the big ideas of Semester 1 and reflect. Finally, ask them to set a goal for Semester 2 based on one of the HOWL expectations. Remind them to use evidence from your course and their own work.
