Mrs. Bennett's First Grade Class
January 31, 2014
Math
We are finishing up our unit on place value. We will spend a day having fun exploring the hundreds place by using graham crackers, pretzels, and marshmallows to build numbers. (Hundreds place are the graham crackers, tens place are the pretzel rods, ones place are the marshmallows.)
We are moving on to computation of addition and subtraction within 100. They need to add and subtract two digit numbers without regrouping. They also need to mentally add and subtract 10 from a number.
Feel free to have your child explore my website to watch videos and play games to help them master these concepts.
We will also be focusing on fluency of math facts to 10. Many students have mastered addition and subtraction to 20, but not fluency to 10. Please take any free time you have (in the car, etc) to help your child memorize their math facts of addition and subtraction to 10. Thank you!
Spelling
Spelling website: www.bigiqkids.com The login is cbennett.pe and the password is 1234. There are fun games to help your child practice the weekly words.
We are on Week 9. The rule is: long u and long i words.
The words are: use, like, white, time, side, tune, said, of
The sentences are: Jill said to use the white pan. I like this side of the hill.
Writing
We will be publishing their writing. They get to choose how they will publish their story: the app of story buddy, a power point presentation, or on paper.
Sight Words
If your child has passed all of the sight words, their focus is not their math facts to 10. They will no longer have sight words to practice, just their "sight facts". Please practice these as you did your sight words so they can know the answer as soon as they see the math fact, just like reading their sight words. They have 30 seconds for each set of math facts. The facts are in their goal notebooks. If you would like a copy for home, just let me know and I would be happy to send some home.
Reading Skills
We are working on several skills:
ask and answer questions while reading informational texts
explain the reasons an author gives to support points
identify the similarities and differences between two informational texts
know if the information came from the words or the photographs
identify the main idea and key details
Reading / Phonics
Some groups have began the rivers and ladders. The rivers have the vowels written out along a river graphic. They have to be able to say the sounds to the vowel letters quickly and correctly to keep from "falling into the river". If you would like copies of the rivers to practice at home, just let me know. This is difficult if they have not truly master Vowel Town. The ladders take it a step farther. They have to be able to identify the vowel(s) in a word and only say the vowel sound for given words.
If your child has finished Rivers and Ladders, we will be focusing on reading words with those vowel sounds and reading more books! Their phonics lessons will continue as normal. They will also get to put a chapter book in their book box to enjoy during read to self time!
