Badges, Levels, and Descriptions

The Instructional Technology Support Office (ITSO) is excited to issue badges via Credly's Acclaim platform as evidence that earners have participated in, and completed specific criteria for ITSO professional development. Badges can be earned individually for specific topics/skills and/or collected to earn a Level badge.


See below the list of descriptions for badges currently offered.

Online Teaching Level Badges

Online Teaching Level 1

The Online Teaching Level 1 badge signifies an instructor's interest and commitment to create a quality online course. Instructors earn this badge by completing all seven level 1 badge modules:

  1. Intro to Online Teaching
  2. Quality Standards for Online Classes
  3. Intro to Laulima
  4. Instructor Presence
  5. Accessible Content
  6. Copyright Fundamentals
  7. Student Authentication

Online Teaching Level 2

The Online Teaching Level 2 badge signifies an instructor's demonstrated ability to use Laulima to build an online course. Instructors who have already earned the Online Teaching Level 1 badge can earn this badge by completing all eight level 2 badge modules:

  1. Course Design
  2. Laulima Organizational Tools
  3. Laulima Course Info Tools
  4. Laulima Communication Tools
  5. Laulima Activity Tools
  6. Laulima Testing Tools
  7. Laulima Content Tools
  8. Course Starter


Level 2 attainment is the equivalent to completing Phase 1 (6-week online class) of the former Online Course Development Program (OCDP).


DCs should feel comfortable to tentatively schedule the instructor to teach the online course with a firm deadline for complete build and evaluation of the course.

Online Teaching Level 3

The Online Teaching Level 3 badge signifies an instructor's demonstrated ability to facilitate and teach an online course. There are no additional badges that need to be earned to apply for the Online Teaching Level 3 badge. However, instructors need to complete the requirements for one of the following 3 options:


Option 1
(Best suited to instructors who are new to online teaching and/or Laulima)

  • Earned the Online Teaching Level 1 badge
  • Earned the Online Teaching Level 2 badge
  • Have their course evaluated by a certified online course evaluator, make all recommended revisions.

Option 2
(Best suited to instructors who are new to online teaching and/or Laulima)

  • Earned the Online Teaching Level 1 badge
  • Earned the Online Teaching Level 2 badge
  • Participate and complete the Online Teaching Mentoring program

Option 3
(Best suited to instructors who have recent experience teaching an online that they built in Laulima)

  • Have a recently designed, built, and taught course evaluated by a certified online course evaluator, make all recommended revisions and complete any recommended training.


DCs should feel comfortable to continue scheduling the instructor to teach online courses.

Online Teaching Level 4

Level 4 attainment demonstrates an instructor’s commitment to professional development and improving distance education at Hawai‘i CC. Instructors who have already earned the Level 2 badge can earn this badge by earning two additional badges:

  1. Either the Certified Evaluator Silver badge or the Certified Mentor Silver badge (See the advanced badges section below)
  2. At least one Toolbox badge earned within the last 12 months


The Online Teaching Expert badge expires after 12 months, but can be renewed annually.

Technology Tool (Toolbox) Badges

Flipgrid

To earn the Toolbox: Flipgrid badge, instructors learn how to use Flipgrid to create interactive, video-based discussion activities for courses.

Screencast-o-Mastic

To earn the Toolbox: Screencast-o-Matic badge, instructors learn how to use Screencast-o-Matic to create instructional videos for courses. Also included in this module is instruction on how to upload completed videos to YouTube and use the YouTube Studio to create captions for accessibility.
