BRIGGS NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Principal's Message
A letter from Dr. Boeve
November is one of my favorite months of the year. The temperature is finally cold in the morning and beautiful during the day. The fall colors are in full swing. And the holidays that are focused on family and gratitude and caring are upon us.
INTEGRITY is the CHARACTER TRAIT for November. Integrity defines who you are and what you stand up for, and whether you can brave through conflict and hardship while doing what is right. Through our Second Step Curriculum we teach students:
What INTEGRITY looks like? Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Sticking up for another student being intimidated. Not giving into peer pressure
What INTEGRITY sounds like? “I will be respectful of myself and others.” “I will not blame others for my mistakes.” “I will be honest and trustworthy.”
We have much to be grateful for at Briggs. We have a wonderful, caring staff from our custodian, our Paraprofessionals, our office staff, to all our teachers. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them, and I know your children are in good hands. We have a supportive community, parents/guardians, and a giving and engaged PFA at the forefront. Finally, we have incredible students who challenge themselves every day to learn and be engaged as well as challenging us to become better people. They are why we are here every day!
Mental Health
Good mental health is critical to student success in school and life. Students who receive social–emotional and mental and behavioral health support achieve better academically. School climate, classroom behavior, engagement in learning, and students’ sense of connectedness and well-being all improve as well. Mental health is not simply the absence of mental illness but also encompasses wellness promotion; social, emotional, and behavioral health; and the ability to cope with life’s challenges.
All CVUSD schools utilize a Multi-Tiered System of Support for Behavior (MTSS-B) program foster school-wide positive behaviors and interventions that seek to prevent student misbehavior by providing direct intervention through a Positive Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Framework. MTSS-B is a comprehensive system of social, emotional, and behavioral supports to promote student wellness and improve engagement in learning that is part of every student's curriculum.
Tier I Universal Support
The Tier 1 MTSS-B model is universal or primary approaches that are preventative in nature are put into place. These approaches are for all students, staff, and settings and include the development of school-wide expectations, a behavior matrix, and reinforcement systems (Panther Perks) to reward desired social behavior. Outcomes, systems, data, and practices are continually evaluated when providing universal support and changes are made as needed. All students receive weekly Second Step Lessons that are embedded into their school day. Second Step lessons are research-based lessons taught by teachers to promote the social-emotional development, safety, and well-being of children from Early Learning through Grade 8. Some Second Step Strategies taught are:
Say the problem. Without blame.
Think of solutions. Safe and respectful.
Explore Consequences. What would happen if...
Pick the best solution. Make your plan.
Stop. Use your signal.
Name. You're feeling.
Calm Down. Breathe, count, use positive self-talk.
Tier II Secondary Support
Tier II, MTSS-B secondary systems provide targeted interventions to support students who are not responding to universal strategies. Interventions within the secondary system are more specific to the needs of some children and designed for a smaller number of students who require more focused behavioral support. Decisions to implement Secondary support are determined based on records of student behavior/student data. Effective secondary interventions produce measurable changes in behavior and improvement in student success. Progress monitoring is used to evaluate student outcomes, determining if adjustments should be made to an intervention or if a student needs more intensive interventions provided through Tertiary support. Some secondary interventions include:
Check-in Check-out (CICO), Students check in with designated CICO Facilitator/s before the beginning and at the end of each school-day to receive positive contact, pre-corrects, reminders of school-wide expectations and, if needed, basic school supplies. At the end of each class period, classroom teachers provide behavioral feedback, based on the school-wide expectations, on a Daily Progress Report Card (DPR).
Social Instructional Groups, Students are supported in a small group for direct instruction of school-wide expectations and/or replacement behaviors, including structured practice and direct behavioral feedback. Student behaviors and feedback are monitored through a Daily Progress Report (DPR) card that is updated by a teacher to reflect skills taught in the group.
As part of our MTSS-B, Tier II support, Teachers, Students and Parents/Guardians can reach out for assistance. Student, parent/guardian access to Assistance forms may be found on our school website under “Briggs News and Headlines", upon receiving the Request for Assistance, School Administration or a School Counselor will contact the respondent.
Tier III Tertiary Support
Tertiary supports are designed for individual students who are identified as having severe, chronic or pervasive concerns. The goal of Tertiary support is to diminish problem behavior and increase a student’s skills and opportunities for an enhanced quality of life. Tertiary interventions support is tailored to meet a student’s specific needs and the characteristics and specific circumstances related to the student. Tertiary support includes:
Individualized CICO, Groups & Mentoring: Individualized CICO has most of the same features as the generic CICO but includes some simple individualizations (i.e., change in location of CICO, addition of more Check-ins, etc.) without creating individual student goals. Mentoring involves one adult meeting with one or more students at a time, one or more times per week, to provide pre-corrects and a positive connection with the school through a positive relationship.
Behavior Support Plans (BSP): A BSP is developed for a student based on a brief assessment of function of behavior (FBA) by the Tier 2 Problem Solving Team. Behavior support plans address only one problem behavior at a time, typically in one setting. Interventions are chosen or designed based on youth’s strengths, assessed function of behavior and skills-deficits. BSP are only for general education students. If a student has an IEP, they must go through the FBA/BIP process.
Wraparound (Wrap): An identified team facilitator engages a student and his/her family in developing a unique team to support student success at home, school and in the community. The facilitator arranges for frequent team meetings to develop, refine, and progress-monitor interventions and supports that address multiple life domains across settings. Plans include highly individualized interventions based on the student's strengths and needs identified by the student, family and other team members.
Lunch
CVUSD is offering free breakfast and lunch to all students though the end of the school year. We have noticed at lunch that:
Some students who bring their lunch from home are also getting lunch from the cafeteria; students are eating double lunch.
Some students are throwing out their lunch from home and getting a school lunch.
Several students who bring their lunch from home are getting lunch from the cafeteria because there is a food item that they want (milk, fruit, brownie, etc.) and through the rest out.
Please take the time to talk to your student(s) about this. There is an abundance of food that is being wasted daily.
Drop of and Pick up Safety Reminders
Gates for all students, having breakfast, opens at 7:30am.
100 Mile Club starts at 7:40am
To ensure our students’ safety, do not double park (or stop anywhere in the parking lot) and ask your student to cross the parking lot or walk between cars to get to the entrance gate. This is not safe.
If you not chose not to use the designated drop-off and pick-up lane, you may use the sidewalk.
Families parking on Roswell Avenue, PLEASE use the designated crosswalk in front of the school where our crossing guard is on duty. Every day we see families jaywalking on Roswell Avenue, which is illegal, obstructs motion traffic, and this is not safe.
