K-5 Math- September 2022
Kindergarten Math
Topic 1: Count Quantities 1-5
Topic 1: Cardinality of a Group of Objects
Topic 1: Read and Write Numerals 0 to 5
Topic 2: Equal Groups
Topic 2: Greater Than and Less Than
Topic 2: Compare Numbers
1st Grade Math
Topic 2: Addition Strategies
Counting On: Students count 1, 2, or 3 from any number to add within 10. Number lines are used to illustrate this strategy.
Doubles and Near Doubles: Students learn to recognize doubles and near doubles when they add within 10.
Add 5 and Add to 10: Students use a ten-frame to help them complete addition facts that have an addend of 5. The ten-frame also helps them generate a fact that has a sum of 10.
Commutative Property of Addition: Students learn that they can use the same addends to add in any order.
Topic 2: Subtraction Strategies
Count Back: Students count back to subtract within 10. Number lines are used to illustrate this strategy.
Think Addition to Subtract: Students complete a subtraction fact by thinking about the related addition fact. Students can consider subtraction as a missing-addend problem.
Topic 1: Understand Addition and Subtraction (First half of Topic)
Students also solve "put together" problems. These situations are also known as part-part-whole situations.
2nd Grade Math
Topic 1: Add and Subtract Within 20
Students use subtraction strategies such as counting on and counting back, thinking addition to subtract, and making 10.
Topic 2: Even or Odd Numbers
Topic 2: Equal Groups
3rd Grade Math
Topic 1: Understanding Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers
Multiplication Situations
Students will look at equal-group situations and arrays while looking at a bar model and number lines as well.
Division Situations
Students will look at Equal Groups: Group Size Unknown and Equal Groups: Number of Groups Unknown using bar diagrams
3 Act Math- What's the Point?
Students draw on their conceptual understanding of multiplication, division, and rounding. They make use of representations and tools such as
- writing numerical expressions
- drawing diagrams
- interpreting their results
Topic 2: Multiplication Facts: Use Patterns
Topic 2 focuses on using patterns and properties to begin to build fluency with the multiplication facts involving 0, 1, 2, 5, 9, and 10.
Patterns in MultiplicationStudents will look at patterns in multiplication, properties and situations involving equal groups.
4th Grade Math
Topic 1: Generalize Place Value Understanding
Topic 1 extends understanding of place value from 1,000 to 1,000,000. Relationships between the values of digits in different places are developed and used to compare and round numbers.
Place Value
Compare and Round Whole Numbers
Students will compare multi-digit whole numbers and rounding numbers finding the nearest multiple of a specified power of 10.
3 Act Task- Page Through
What is your favorite book?
Do you have more than one favorite? What is special about your favorite book?
Students draw on their conceptual understanding of place value and rounding. They make use of representations and tools such as:
- place value charts
- place value blocks
- numbers written in expanded form
Topic 2: Fluently Add and Subtract Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
Topic 2 focuses on developing fluency with the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.
Find Sums and DifferencesStudents will use mental math to add and subtract using the different properties. They will also look at the standard algorithm.
Fluently Add and Subtract Whole Numbers
Students use the standard algorithms to find sums and differences of multi-digit numbers.
5th Grade Math
Topic 1: Understand Place Value
Topic 1 focuses on deepening the understanding of place value in both whole numbers and decimals.
Whole-Number Place ValueStudents will be learning about the exponents and the power of 10 as well as place value relationships in whole numbers.
Decimal Place Value
Students will learn the relationships in decimals and how to read and write decimals. They will also compare and round decimals
3 Act Math- Buzz In
Students draw on their conceptual understanding of decimals and place value. They make use of representations and tools such as:
- place value number charts
- numbers written in expanded form
- estimation
Topic 2: Use Models and Strategies to Add and Subtract Decimals
Develop Number Sense
Students will develop number sense by using mental math to add and subtract decimals as well as estimate sums and differences.
Add and Subtract Decimals
They will also use models to add and subtract decimals.
