Kindergarten News
Reading: As we are studying non-fiction informational texts, we continue practicing our Reading Super Powers to figure out tricky words. The Powers we have been practicing are:
*Pointer Power (Pointing to each word as we read.)
*Picture Power (Looking at picture clues to help.)
*Sound Power (Looking at the beginning sound and other sounds.)
*Snap Word Power (Finding all the words we’ve learned ie. Color Words and Snap Words.)
*Word Part Power -ch, sh, th, (digraphs) and -ing*Little Word Power (Saturday, Sunday, November)
We ALWAYS ask ourselves if it looks right, sound right, and does it make sense!
Writing: We are so excited to be writing our own “How-To” pieces! Our Kinders are working so hard to be the teachers through our own writing! They are writing step by step pieces about how to do something that they are experts at! Students are having a blast choosing their own topics such as: how to make a peanut butter sandwich, how to draw a smiley face, How to do a cartwheel, how to play soccer, how to bake cookies, etc.
Math: We learned about measurement! We used nonstandard units of measurement (cubes & craft sticks) to measure various objects and compare their measurements. We discussed that when we measure, we must start at one end and go to the other end in a straight line. We must make sure that there are no spaces. Next, we will work on shapes; 2-D and 3-D!
Science: Calling all Scientists! We are putting on our science hats and learning about Forces and Motion. The students have been so excited to conduct experiments and see whether an object moves by “pushing” or pulling”. We have been recording our findings in our Push and Pull Interactive Notebook! So far, our K Scientists have discovered the following ideas:
I can move a person on a scooter by using a pushing or pulling force.
I can use a lot of force when throwing a ball that is heavy.
My body is in motion when I move, dance, and do physical activity.
If I want to slow down or stop an object from moving, I can use friction.
The experiments we will be working on in the coming weeks are:
Magnetic Objects
Air Pressure with Pom Poms
The Marble Maze
Gravity Tunnel STEAM activity
